Description

Patented Dec. I6, |902. H. A. BREUL.
CUTTING TOUL. (Appnm on me sep: d 1900) (No Mndlel.)
Wilma/oom Y JQM UNITED STATES PATENT EETCE..
' RICHARD A. BREUL, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
CUTTING-TOOL.
` SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,184, dated December 16, 1902.
' Application filed September 6. 1900. Serial No. 29,168. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it nfl/ay concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD A. BREUL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting- Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cutter-holders for metal-Working, and is adapted to be used on various machines Where similar cutters are employed.
It is the object of my invention to improve upon cutter-holders by providing a special form of seat for the blade, whereby the same may be held in a particular relation to the tool and which when ground properly produces an improved quality of work which is more quickly performed. A cutter held by the special relation to the holder, as will later be more fully described, sets the cutting-point and edges of the tool in an advantageous position with respect to the work, since it produces a shearing cut which is performed easier, better, and with less labor than were the blade set square with the Work in the usual manner. The cutterblade also requires less grinding when pointed as shown, thus saving a great amount of labor throughout a shop Where many such tools are in use.
With the above objects in view my invention resides and consists inthe novel construction and combination of parts shown upon the accompanying sheet of drawings, forming part of this speciication, upon which similar characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several figures, and of which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my tool-holder complete with the cutter therein. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an end or front view of the same.
Referring in detail to the characters of ref-` erence marked upon the drawings, A indicates a holder, which is formed from suitable bar metal cut and shaped as desired; B indicates a groove which is diagonally situated in one side of the holder and extending from Aone of the forward corners back about midway of the holder and adjacent to the opposite edge. This groove is designed as a recess for the cutter C proper and in cross-section is substantially of a rectangular form, being, however, located at an angle to the sides of a holder, thus retaining the cutter-blade in an angular position with relation to the sides of the holder. This cutter is held in place by means of a plate D, having an enlargement E corresponding with and to engage one side of the cutter-blade, as clearly appears in Fig. 3. A screw F is seated in the holder at an angle to the same, its position being preferably in line with that of the front and back surfaces of the cutter-blade, so as to more rrnly clamp the plate thereagainst.
The shape of the cutter may be varied without departing from the essence of my invention, and, in fact, such a cutter as I haveshown in a second application executed and filed by me on even date herewith having a V-shaped grooved faced with what I have termed a diamond cutting-point7 may be employed, if desired.
Having thus described my invention., what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A lathe-tool holder' having a cutter held in its sides angularly inclined to the sides of the holder,'a clamp to secure the cutter and a "clamping-screw for said plate at approximately the same angle to the sides of the holder as the cutter-recess.
Signed at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairlield and State of Connecticut, this 5th day of September, A. D. 1900.
