KEY.
Sp eeification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov, 2, I969.
Original application filed Marblrifi, 1909, Serial Kc. 484,353. Divided and; thisapglieati'on flied May 25,
To all whom it may BOTLGTfl.
Be it known that I, JOHN BnAszczYK, a subject of the Czar of Russia, and resident of the city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new 7 and useful Improvements in Keys, of which the following is a specification, being a division of application for Letters Patent, Serial No; 484,353, filed March 19; I909.
The present invention relates to keys for looks, and moreparticularly to keys for permutation looks The permutation lock, described in application for Letters Patent, Serial No. i84c,353, filed March 19, I969, of which the present application is a division, comprises two independent tumblers controlling a look ing bolt. ()ne of these is a; rotatable tumbler, controlled by a permutation mechanism, while the other is operated by a key. When a certain combination is set, the rotatable tumbler mustbe turned throngh a predetermined angular distance to release the locking bolt, and at the same time the other tumbler raised to a certain height, depending upon the combination set, so as to be disengaged from the locking bolt simultaneously with the tumbler controlled by the combination.
The object of the, present invention is, to provide a key which is normally incapable of performing its functions, but which may be readily set by one familiar with its operation and with the combination of the lock, so that it may, first, after a given ninnber of turns, bring the rotatable tumbler, eontrolled by the combination mechanism, into a position, whereby the locking bolt is released by the same, second, raise the other tumbler for a similar purpose, and, third, retract the locking bolt or bolts after the tumblers are set properly.
A furtherobject of the invention is to provide a key, consisting of a tumbler operating part and of a locking bolt retracting part, and to combine said two parts in such a manner that the same will not interfere with each other in their operation.
With these and other object-sin View, the invention consists of a key stem and a hit, upon which are shiftably arranged a plurality of cams, and a secondary key arranged on said stem.
Serial No. 49$,M
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying' drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation ofthe key, t forming the subject, matter of the present application for Letters Patent, Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2, 2 of Fig. 1,0n an enlarged scale, Fig. 3 aside elevation of the shiftable cams and thein shifting means,
4 is a front elevation of the means indicating the positions of the cams upon the key-bit, and Fig. '5, is a section taken on line 5, 5 of Fig l.
The key illustrated comprises a stem 6, having a bit 7, upon which is mounted a cam-wheel 8, arranged in a: plane at right angles to the plane oi the bit. whee1 comprises in the present case four eams if, 10, 11 and 12, of increasing length, l and is fixedly attached to a spindle l3, ro-
mountec? in said key-bit and being provided with an operating knob 14, proided with marks 15, i5, eorresponding to the four cams of the earn-wheel. To the :spindle 13 is furthermore attached a disk i 16, provided with reeesses 1'1, i7 corresponding in ntunber to the number or" the camsoi' the cam-wheel. A spring 18 is provided upon thabit of the key and engages, :Wllell a GEUIL of the cam-wheel is set to its operating position, its corresponding recess 17, to keep said cam-wheel in the desired pesiticui, The stem 6 earries furthermore slidably thereon a sleeve, 12, provided with a bit 20 upon its outer end, and with a knob 21 upon its inner end for operating said bit 2K). The main bit '2' of the key is recessecl at 22, and the sleeve 19 in a similar manner at 23, allowing thereby of the longitudinal shifting of said sleeve into a position, whereby the bit 20' may actuate the locking bolt retraeting means, arranged substantially in the plane of the tumblers, which are operated by the main bit 7,
In operation, the knob 14 is turned to bring the proper cam in the operative position. The key is then inserted into the lock in such a manner that the sleeve 19 and therewith the bit 20 is kept in its outer position, that is in aposition whereby the inner end of the sleeve contacts with the; bow of the key. The main bit of the key is now turned a number of times, depending upon 'the combination set, whereby the said bit will turn the rotating tumbler through a This canrcertain angular distance, and raise and lower the other tumbler accordingly. If the proper cam is set upon the bit, the second tumbler will be raised by the said cam during the last turn of the key so as to dis engage the locking bolt at the moment the rotatlng tumbler releases the same. Inserting now the sleeve 19 into the key of the lock, the bit 20 thereof may be turned to retract the released locking bolt.
What I claim is:
1. In a key, the combination with a stem, of a key bit thereon, a plurality of cams arranged on said bit in a plane at right angles to the plane thereof, means for shifting said cams through certain angles, and a secondary key slidably arranged on said stem.
2. In a key, the combination with a stem, of a key bit thereon, a plurality of cams arranged on said bit in a plane at right angles to the plane thereof, means for shifting said cams upon said bit in their operating plane,
4. In a key, the comblnatlon with a stem,
of a key bit thereon, a plurality of cams arranged on said bit in a plane at right angles to the plane thereof, means for shifting said cams upon said key bit in their operating plane, and means for predetermining the positionsof said cams.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 19th day of May, A. D. 1909.
JOHN BLASZCZYK.
