Description
N. PETERS, woo-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
*disiteii LOU'S TH. SIMON, @F NEW YORK,
Letters Pdtent No., 93,916, dated August 17, 1869.

IMPRGVmD ROCKING-CHAIR FAN.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Pate'nt and mal-zing part of the same.
To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, Louis TH. SIMON, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Rocking-Chair Fan; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the. art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which dlawing- Figure l is a side elevation of a rocking-chair cont Lining my invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
'lhis invention relates to chairs with which are coinbined means for fanning or blowing currents of air upon the occupants; and
lt consists in a peculiar tan-attachment*'combined with a rocking-chair, and so constructed that it can be attached and detached. at pleasure.
The letter A designates a rocking-chair, iiihcolgfacction with which I illustrate my invent-ion.
To the top ofthe back Blot' the chair, .tasten my fan-attachment, which consistsuolt"y a curved frame, C, from whose beak 0r upper end hangs a pendnlons fan, which is hinged so as to swing by ther rocking' oi' the chair.
l'lhe connection between thefan D and ,trarne A.C is made in theibllowing manner:v I'
To the beak ofthe framel is attached Ia horizontal tube, E, which forms thc central or male part of the hinge-joint, the female parts consisting :of two eyes, 'E l?, which are formed on the ends of arms that extend from the edge of the fan, said eyes being adjusted at the ends ot' the tube in line tl1erewith,-and connected with the tube by a joint-pin or pivot, G.'
The fan can be easily detached from the frame withdrawing the pin.
ciamp or' The. frame is composed of two curved igars, H H, united at their ends, as shown in the drawing, the
vjunction of their upper ends being so made as to form a beak that embraces the joint-tube E, and their com bined lower ends being inserted in the head of the clamp I.
The clamp I is bifnrcated on its under side, and is so shaped that its forks or divisions are crescent-shaped in face View, the horns 0r extremities oi the rear fork or division being provided with set-screws s, which fasten the clamp tothe top of the chair-back, when its forks are set over it, as shown in the drawing.
'lhis constrnetion and arrangement enable ine to remove the fan at pleasure, or to remove the frame also from the chair. Then the fan is hinged to the frameits operation is automatic whenever the chair is rocked to and fro.
The curves of the bars or rods H H, 'that compose the frame, are not concentric, and they are connected together between their ends, at suitable points of their divergence, by braces J J the construction and shape of the frame and its fan and clamp being such as to combine an ornamental character with strength and simplicity.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The single clamp I, supporting the arms H, in combinationwith the suspended fan D, as applied to the back ofthe. rocking-chair, substantially as and for the purpose described. LO UIS (1TH. SIMON.
