COMBINED ORIGINAL PACKAGE AND SAFE FOR MATCHES.

To all whom it 'may concern:

Be it known that I, FERDINAND F. THEO- BALD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyhago and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Combined Original Package and Safe for Matches; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the Y art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to acombined original package and safe for matches, and pertains more especially to an original package which can be attached to a wall or placed endwise on a table or shelf and used as a match-safe.

The primary object of this invention is to make an original package which can be used as a match-safe and has its component parts constructed and relatively arranged to render them capable of being readily and economically assembled.

Another object is to provide a combined original package and match-safe which can be made approximately as cheaply as the original rectangular package heretofore generally employed.

With these objects in view, and to the end of realizing any other advantage hereinafter appearing, this invention consists in certain features of construction, and combinations and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a section taken horizontally through an original package arranged in a horizontal plane and embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 22, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 3 is a vertical section illustrating the package shown in Figs. 1 and 2 arranged endwise vertically and supported from a wall and used as a match-safe. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line 4 4, Fig. 3, looking downfward1y. Fig. 5 is a vertical section on line "5 5, Fig. 8, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow, and portions are broken away in Fig. 5 to more clearly show the construction.

9 and 9 of the receptacle A and across the free edge of the adjacent end wall 7 of the receptacle to the free extremity of the said end of the cover, as shown very clearly in Fig. 5. The opening b therefore communicates with and forms an outlet for the receptacle A for the discharge of matches from the said receptacle.

lVhen the original package is closed as shown in Fig. 2, the opening b in the cover B is closed by the front al of a tray D which has its bottom arranged next externally of and parallel with the end wall 7 of the receptacle A. The tray D is suitably supported from the receptacle A, and the original package when it is in position to be used as a match-safe is arranged endwise vertically as shown in Fig. 3 with the tray D at the lower end of the package, and at .the other end of the package two registering holes or

12 and 13 are formed in the receptacle-bottom 6 and cover B, respectively, and shown engaged in Fig. 3 by a nail E driven into the wall C from which the package is shown supported in the said ligure.

The 4tray D to render the package suitable for use as a match-safe is, as shown in Figs. 3, l and 5, slid or actuated outwardly to permit matches (not shown) to move from within the receptacle A through the opening in the cover B into the said tray from which they can be removed one or Va few at a time not unlike in any ordinary matchsafe. It will be observed therefore that the front CZ of the tray D closes the opening 7J in the cover B, or is removed outwardly from the said opening, according as the tray is in its inner position shown `in Fig. 2 or in its outerposition shown in Fig. 3, and that the tray in its outer position is arranged to conduct matches from the opening or outlet b to a point beyond the exterior of the cover.

The side members or sides 15 of the tray preferably extend inwardly from the front of the tray at opposite ends respectively of the front and prevent endwise displacement of any matches from the bottom of the tray when the latter is in its outer position in the match-safe-forming position of the package. y

Means whereby the tray D is held to the receptacle A during the actuation ofthe tray and in either position of the tray without interfering with the movability of thel tray preferably comprise a bail-shaped member which has

16 and 16 thereof parallel and connected with opposite sides 15 and 15 respectively of the tray at the inner end of the tray and arranged between the external surface of op-` posite side walls respectively of the receptacle A and the cover B and extending longitudinally of and parallel with the said walls. The said bail-shaped member has its central portion 17 arranged and extending across the external surface of the end wall 8 of the receptacle A. Obviously the end wall 7 of the receptacle A, having its external surface overlapped by the bottom of the tray in either position of the tray, prevents displacement of the tray endwise of the cover C in one direction, and it will be observed that the central portion 17 of the bail-shaped member, overlapping the external surface of the other end wall S of the said receptacle A in either position of the tray, prevents displacement of the tray endwise of the cover in the opposite direction. It will be observed also that the said bailshaped member of the tray and the side 10 of the cover constitute 'means for limiting the outward movement of the tray.

I would here remark that in assembling the parts the tray D is applied to the receptacle A preparatory to the application of the cover B and thereupon the said cover is slid onto the said receptacle in the direction of the tray.

The tray D is provided with a recess 2() formed in and centrally of the inner edge of the bottom of the tray, and the central portion 17 of the bail-shaped member is provided centrally of its inner edge with a recess 21. The recesses 20 and 21 are for convenience in actuating the tray from its inner into its outer position. The person taking hold of the original package, preparatory to actuating the tray from its inner into its outer position, places the thumbs. of his hands against the external surface of the side 10 of the cover B and places the tip of a finger of one hand within the recess 20 and the tip of a finger of the other hand Within the recess 21, and thereupon actuates the said lingers toward the said side of the cover and thereby shifts the tray from its inner into its outer position.

What I claim is 1. In a package of the character indicated,

a rectangular receptacle having a bottom, two -opposite end walls and two opposite side walls; a telescoping cover which receives the receptacle endwise and is provided at one end and in one of its sides with an opening which extends across the free edges of and between the side walls of the receptacle and across the free edge of the adjacent end wall of the receptacle to the free extremity of the said end of the cover; a slidable tray having its bottom arranged externally of the said end wall and provided with a front which closes the aforesaid opening or is removed outwardly from the opening according as the tray is in its inner or outer position, said tray having two sides which extend inward from the front of the tray between t-he external surface of opposite side walls respectively of the said receptacle and the cover, and means whereby displacement of the tray endwise of the cover is prevented.

2. In a package of the character indicated, a quadrangular receptacle having a bottom, two opposite end walls and two opposite side walls; a telescoping cover which receives the receptacle endwise and is provided at one end and in one of its sides with an opening which extends transversely of the receptacle at the free edges and between the side walls of the receptacle, and a slidable tray provided with a front which closes the said opening or is removed outwardly from the opening according as the tray is in its f inner or outer position and having its bottom arranged parallel with the adjacent end wall of the receptacle, which tray has a bailshaped member which extends along the side walls and other end1 wall of said receptacle and is arranged to hold the tray to the said receptacle in either position of the tray.

3. In a package of the character indicated, a rect-angular receptacle having a bottom, two opposite end walls and two opposite side walls; a telescoping cover which receives the receptacle endwise and is provided at one end and in one of its sides with an opening which extends across the free edges of and between the side walls of the receptacle and across the free edge of the adjacent end Wall of the receptacle to the free extremity of the said end of the cover, and a movable tray having its bottom arranged externallykof'y the said end wall and provided with a front which closes the aforesaid opening or is removed outwardly from the opening according as the trayV is in its inner or outer position, which tray has a bail-shaped mem# ber which has itsopposite end-portions ,ar-

ranged between the external surface of opey posite side walls respectively of the aforesaid receptacle and the cover and extending longitudinally of the said walls, said bailshaped member having its central portion arranged and extending across the external surface of the other end wall of the said receptacle.

4. In a package of the character indicated, a rectangular receptacle having a bottom, two opposite end walls and two opposite side walls; a telescoping cover which receives the receptacle endwise and is provided, at one end and in one of its sides, with an opening which extends across the free edges of and between the side walls of the receptacle and across the free edge of the adjacent end wall of the receptacle to the free extremity of the said end of the cover, and a movable tray having its bottom arranged externally of the last-mentioned end wall of the aforesaid receptacle and provided with a front which closes the aforesaid opening or is removed outwardly from the opening according as the tray is in its inner or outer position, which tray has two side members interposed between the external surface of opposite side walls respectively of the aforesaid receptacle and the cover, said tray having a bail-shaped member which has its opposite end-portions connected with opposite side members respectively of the tray and arranged between the external surface of opposite side walls respectively of the aforesaid receptacle and the cover and extending longitudinally of the said walls, said bail-shaped member having its central portion arranged and extending across the external surface of the other end wall of the said receptacle.

5. In a package of the character indicated, l

a rectangular receptacle having a bottom, two opposite end walls and two opposite side walls, and a telescoping cover which receives the receptacle endwise and is provided, at one end and in one ofits sides, with an opening which extends across the free edges of and between the side walls of the receptacle and across the free edge of the adjacent end wall of the receptacle to the free extremity of the said end of the cover, of a movable tray having its bottom arranged next externally of the last-mentioned end wall and provided with a front which closes the aforesaid opening or is removed outwardly from the opening according as the tray is in its inner or outer position, which tray has two side members interposed between the external surface of opposite side walls respectively of the aforesaid receptacle and the cover, said tray being provided with a recess in and centrally of the inner edge of the bottom of the tray, said tray having a bailshaped member which has its opposite endportions connected with opposite side members respectively of the tray and arranged between the external surface of opposite side walls respectively of the aforesaid receptacle and the cover and extending longitudinally of the said walls, which bail-shaped memberl has its central portion arranged and extending across the external surface of the other end wall of the said receptacle and provided centrally of its inner edge with a recess.
