ZOI-IRAB DIXON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BARREL HEAD AND HOOP FASTENER.
Specification of Letters 1?atent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1909.
Application filed. December 11, 1908. Serial No. 467,064.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZOHRAB DIXON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel Head and Hoop Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fastening means for barrels, the object being to provide a simple and efficient device of this character, which may be applied to any barrel having wooden heads, staves and hoops.
A further object of my invention is to provide means in the fastener whereby the same may be secured in position by means of an ordinary nail.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in such a novel construction as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particu larly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved barrel fastener in its preferred form, Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the fastener applied to a barrel.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates the barrel fastener, and 2 a nail for securing the fastener in position. The nail 2 passes through the chime-hoop 3 into the barrel stave 4, thus securing said hoop in position. The fastener 1 is substantially U- shaped, and is made preferably of a single piece of steel wire. The body portions of the fastener is formed by doubling the wire upon itself until the two ends are substantially parallel, and an eye 5 is formed at the union of said portions as shown. The ends 6 engaging the barrel head 7 are preferably chisel-pointed, and the general shape of the fastener is such as to readily conform to the chime 8 and the chime-hoop 3 when driven into position, each portion compris ing the riser portion 1 the ofi-set portion l and the depending portion 1. The eye 5 has preferably a cut-away portion 9 on its inner face forming the point or shoulder 10 which impinges the chime-hoop 3 when the nail 2 is driven into position, thus ren dering the fastener more secure and preventing the same from rotating on the nail 2 as a pivot.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto, as there mi ht be minor changes made in its shape without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
As a new article of manufacture, a barrel fastener comprising two U-shaped parallel disposed body portions, an eye forming the union of said body portions, and a cut-away portion on the inner face of said e e forming a point to impinge the barre chimehoop, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ZOHRAB DIXON.
