Description
dntell tats/s '.I. J. DOEPKEN, OF LIMA, OHIO.
Letters Pate-nt No. 93,864, dated August `17, `1869.
IMPROVED MEAT-SAFE FOR BUTCHERS AND OTHERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making partof the same.A
' To all whom it may concem Be it known that I, J. J. DOEPKEN, of Lima, in the county of Allen, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butchers MeatSafes; and I do hereby' declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is aperspective view of the safe.
Figure 2, a vertical section in direction of line x x.
Figure 3, a detached section.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the views presented.
In tig. 1, A represents the case, which is constructed of wood, and of any desirable shape and size, in the inside of which is a wall of sheet-metal, B, iig. 2, there# by making the safe doublewalled, having a space between them, which may be filled `up with any non-heatconducting material.
"his .safe is divided into two compartments, O D,
fig. 2, to which access is had by means ofthe doors E F, tig. l.
Immediately below each compartment is' a drawer or. ice-box, G H. p
Said boxes are provided with a double bottom, a b, arranged a short distance from eachother, forming thereby a space between them.
In said space is a frame-work of wood, c, also indicated by the dotted lines in fig.-3,representing a top view of the drawer, whereby the two bottoms are braced and strengthened, thereby rendering the bottom of the box strong and durable for supporting the weight of the ice therein placed. l
I are rollers secured to the bottom of the boxes, and on which they are drawn out for filling in the ice, or for other needful purposes.
.I are guide-rollers, whereby the drawers are retained from rubbing against the sides of'the case, so that they canbe drawn out with greater ease and facility.
Meat-safes, as usually made, consist of a large box opening at the top, inthe bottom of which is placed the ice, and upon. this the meat for preservation. The objection to safes constructed in this way is that it is a matter of much labor to put ice therein, for the reason that it must all be lifted over the top, and in order that the ice shall be evenly laid upon the bottom, it requires a person to enter the safe for that purpose, which 'soils ytheice, and often makes it unfit for the meat to be placed upon.
Also, in the old meat-safe, there are no facilities for cleaning out the waste and rubbish that may fall upon the bottom, such cleaning being usually by some one going into the safe, and throwing the dirt out over the top. It is also inconvenient to put the meat therein, or to remove t-he same therefrom, as it is necessary to reach over and down into the safe to obtain it.
All these of objections are removed by the peculiar construction and arrangement of my safe. The drawers or ice-boxes being separate from the case, allow of their being drawn out, and, as they are mounted upon rollers, it is easily done. They also being at the bottom near the door, access is readily had to them' for cleaning out thc waste that may fall into them from the articles above, and for putting in fresh icc.
4 The meat put into the safe does not come incontact wwith the ice, but is laid above it on the racks or gratos K, which' may be drawn out from the case for the greater convenience of having access to the-.rticles therein, or for placing them thereon. 1
As the inside of the safe, drawers, and grates are all made of sheet-metal, no had odors can arise tot-aint the meat, hence it will at Aall times be kept fresh, clean, and free from all bad odors and easily accessible.
Thedrawers may be removed or dispensed with, and the meat hung upor hooks arranged around the walls ofthe safe.
I am Well aware that sliding drawers provided with rollers are old, as also placing the ice at the bottom of refrigerators. These l do not claim; 'but That I do claim, is The case A, with compartments C D separated by double sheet-metal walls B B, and provided with icedrawers G H, having double bottoms a b and rollers I J, constructed and arranged as herein described.
J. J. DOEPKEN.
