Be it known that I, MARTN MEYERS, Jr., of the city and county :et Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful improvements in Refrigerators; and I' do hereby declare the following te beta clear andexact-deseription of the same, suilicient to'enable others skilled in ithe art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use theksame, reference being hadlto the accompanying drawings; making part-of this specification, and in which- 1 Figure 1 is' a plan view of a refrigerator,illustratingmy invention, the top being removed.

My invention is an improvement lin refrigerators, adapted for receiving and cooling milk, butter, meat, and otherarticles of' food, and4 consists in so constructing the shelves on which the articles rest as to form. sliding drawers, having swinging doors, whereby access is readily had to the articles, as well :is to all parts of. the refrigerator, thusV dispensing with the swinging top or cover, and producing an air-tight receptacle in' a :heap and simple manner. l ,Y Y A v My invention further consists in means for properly rentilating the interior of `the receptacle, so that the cold` air is' brought directly against the food on thev shelvesfand then passed ont into the atmosphere, without again coming in contact with said food.

The front piece, C, of cach drawer-shelf is hinged, so as to swing downwards and outwards, and shonld'be f of a size s. little larger than the rest ofthe drawer,so that the jointat the front side of the ease will he entirely covered when the drawer or shelf is entirely pushed into the ease. is provided with suitable locks, or other fastening-devices, and with knobs or handles, in order to faeilitatethe operation of handling the said piece. v

In Vorder to support the doors when opened, and also to limit their play, I attach brackets, to the inner face ofthe doors, which brackets are slotted, and are guided by pins placed on the inner sides of drawer.

Thesevbrackets may either be segmental or in the form oi'- an ordinary link. 1

The back and vbottonnof each drawer are secured to the side pieces thereof', at a point between the ends and middle, vs o'tlntt when the drawer is entirelyr in the case, a space, D, is left between l,the inner back wall andV the back of the drawerr Any number of drawers can be employed, and a series of shelves, Ac, may be secured -`within them, so as to increase the means for holding various articles. i l

A portion of the upper drawer will be formed into an ice-chamber, F, which consists of a suitable metallic case, having a removable bottom', to which is connected a short pipe, d, extending downwards, and'having'its lower end formed to connect with a ver'tical pipe, e, secured to the inner wall ofthe case, and extending downwards below the bottom thereof. The objeet'ot these pipes is to conduct the water from the melted ice to a A rack or grating will be placed on the' removable'bottoni of the ice-chamber, 'and' on this grating the ico is intended te rest. The ice-chamber will not extend to the'top of the drawer, but'lelaves a small space between it and the top of the case. The inner sidef of .the chamber should be slotted ,enfui-med of open work, to allow the .ready passage ci' cold air out of the chamber into the drawers.
