UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIGE.,
EDGAR B. HOLLISTER AND CHARLES KING, vOF FAGTORYPOINT, VT.
IMPRovEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,469, dated February 15, 1876; application tiled September 9, 1875. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDGAR. B. HOLLIS- TER and G. W. KING, both ot Factory Point, Bennington county, State of Vermont, have invented an Improved Butter-Package, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof.
Our invention consistsV in the combination, with a refrigerator case or box, of suitable chambers, inwhich are arranged removable frames, provided with sliding shelves, the said chambers having spaces between or around them, in which ice may be placed, whereby .butter may be convenientlyT packed for transportation, and kept cool and hard during transit. p
Figure'l is a plan of our butter-package, the lid being removed. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same ou the line a w, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached view of one of the removable frames.
A is the refrigerator box or case, which is preferably made with an interior metal wall, inclosing a charcoal lining or packing, as shown, and provided with the hinged lid L, similarly constructed, as shown. The cham bers C are arranged within the case A, as shown, extending upward from the bottom, land'open at the top, and having the spaces S between them. .The frames F are formed, as shown in Fig. 3, preferably with skeleton sides and back, to permit a free contact of the air ot1 the case with the butter, and with open fronts, and provided with the sliding shelves a, resting upon suitable cross-braces, as shown, and having the folding handles h on their front end,.for convenience in drawing them out of the frame. rlhe frames F and chambers C are preferably formed of tin or zinc, or similar metal. The frames F are arranged to iitinto the chambers C, as shown, and may be placed therein, or removed therefrom conveniently, by means of the handles b, with which each frame is provided on its upper end, as shown. An opening, c, closed by a bung, in the bottom of the case, permits the draining off of the water collecting in the spaces S by the melting oi' the ice therein.
Now, it is evident that butter may be in suitable forms placed on the shelves a, and the said shelves then slid into theirV proper places in the frames F, and the. frames thus filled be placed` in the chambers C, and that, t'he spaces S being then lled with ice,.and the lid of the case secured, the butter vthus packed may be readily and conveniently transported, and kept cool and hard during transit. It is also evident that the butter may be readily exposed, either for sale or for domesticuse, by withdrawing the frame F and pulling out one of the sliding shelves a.
Itis also evident that the number, form, and arrangement of the chambers C and the frames F within the case A may be varied without materially changing the essential fea- Witnesses:
