Description
M. M. KING.
BOX. APPLIOATION FILED JUNE 11, 1909.
Patented Nov. 2, 1909.
fzzzrenZor 2 w m m 5 MADISON M. KING, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MORGAN SPEER, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 17, 1909. Serial No. 502,755.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. h'lADISOX M Kixo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention appertains to boxes or containers, particularly to metallic boxes, wherein the frictional contact between the lid or cover thereof and the box-body is such as to entail considerable effort and exertion in the operation of removing the lid or cover from the box-body; the covers oftentimes being removed with great difliculty, rendering the task of removal irksome and annoying.
Wherefore, the great aim and object of my inventionis to provide a peculiar construction of box and box-cover and a leverdevice, permitting quick and easy removal of the lid or cover, with a minimum degree of effort and exertion.
A secondary and subsidiary, but important, object of my invention is the construction of the box and lid whereby the opening-device or lever-attachment carried by my box will not interfere, in the least, with the capability of my box to be airand dirttight.
With these objects in view, the invention consists of'the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, summed up in the claims, and illus trated in the drawin In the accompanying drawing, forming part of my application for patent, and in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure l is a top plan view of'my box, carrying my openin -attachment or lever; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a section through line 33, Fig. l, the lid or cover being in the normal closed position; Fig. 4 is a section through the same line, showing the position of the parts when the opening-device or lever has been operated; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the box-cover or lid; Fig. 6 is a collective detail view of the opening device or lever.
the contents of the Referring, now, in detail to the drawing: A represents a box-body, in this instance shown as circular in horizontal cross section, though it is to be understood, of course, thatthis is merely illustrative, and that the spirit of the invention is not confined to the general contour of the box-body shown, since, so far as the principles of my invention are concerned, the box-body may, with equal propriety, be of other shapes, as square, oval, hexagonal, or the like.
The box may be of any material, such as metal, wood, or the like; in this instance, the invention is described as applied to a metallic box.
The box-body A is provided on its side a with a circumferential flange a, which may be disposed medially of the top and bottom of the box-body, as shown, though the exact point on the side of the box-body at which the said flange is disposed is entirely immaterial.
B represents the box-lid or cover, rovided with the usual side 6 to engage an closely hug the side a of the box-body, as customary. The side 6 terminates in a circumferentlal, horizontal flange b, terminating, in turn, in a circumferential, down-turned extension 6 which rests squarely on top of the flange a when the lid B is completely seated on the box-body A, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3; this peculiar structure being very important, as it affords an airand dirt-tight closure, obviating the danger of box drying or s oiling. The side a of the box-body A, the ange' a, the flange 6, and the extension 6 thus inclose a chamber 6 isolated from the interior chamber 0 of the box. The extension 6 is rovided witha perforation or aperture 6*. assing through said aperture is a lever C, having a hooked, upper end a, the walls of the aperture a engaging the hook in the crotch 2: thereof.
From the above detailed description of the different parts of my invention, and their assemblage, it.is believed that the cooperation thereof and the operation of the device will be apparent; but, briefly stated, the cooperation of the parts and the operation of Patented Nov. 2, 31.99%. I
the device are as follows: When the box-lid or cover is firmly closed over the box-body A (as in Fig. 3 the lever is in a horizontal, or substantial y horizontal, position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Now, to open the will necessarily force upward, or tilt, the lid or cover B, as aphically shown in Fig. 4, until part of 't e lid has disengaged itself from .the box-body, whereupon, it is, of course, very easy to remove the lid, with no eflect or exertion.
I am aware that the invention is susceptible of alteration as regards details; but all such changes in detail, not affecting the spirit of the invention and coming within the terms of the appended claims, constitute no departure from the invention and fall within the urview thereof.
Havi 1 t us fully described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A box provided with a box-body, having a flange, and with a removable lid or cover, having a horizontal flange terminating in a down-turned, erforated extension resting on said box-body flange, and an opening-device, comprising a lever passing through said perforation and havin a bent end bearing against said box-body ange.
2. Aibox provided with a ing a circumferentialflange, and with a removable lid or cover, having a circumferential, horizontal flange terminating in a circumferential, down-turned, perforated extension resting on said box-body flange, and an o ening-device, comprising a lever passing t rough said perforation and having a bent end bearing against said box-body flange.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two subscribing wit- 40 nesses.
