GEORGE LANGGONS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
REINFORCED CLOTHES-PIN.
Application filed June 27, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE LANGGONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reinforced Clothes-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved construction of clothes pin, the object being to provide an ordinary clothes pin with a reinforcing band whereby the strength of the clothes pin is greatly increased and consequently its time of use greatly prolonged, and another object of the invention is to so construct and apply the reinforcing band that it not only strengthens the joint, but also increases the resiliency of the legs of the pin thereby permitting its use upon heavy and thick articles, such as rugs, carpets and the like.
A still further object is to provide a reinforcing band attached in such a manner that all danger of dislocation is avoided.
WVith these various objects in view my invention consists essentially in applying a circular metallic ring or band at the juncture of the body and leg port-ions of the pin, and then forcing inwardly into the crotch a portion of the said ring or band extending below the body portion, thereby firmly gripping the upper end of the legs upon their inner faces, and securely holding the ring or band in place.
The invention consists also in certain details of construction hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims. In the drawings forming a part of this specification :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clothes pin constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional View, and Fig. 4 is a transverse horizontal section on the line lf-4 of Fig. 3.
In carrying out my invention I employ an ordinary form of wooden clothes pin comprising the body portion A and the legs B, and around this clothes pin at the juncture of the body and legs and overlapping the meeting portions of both, I place a metal band or ring C. This band or ring may be of any suitable thin, flat metal, and may be applied in various ways, but the manner of constructing and applying said ring or band has nothing to do with my present in Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
Serial No. 440,675.
vention. In order to securely hold this ring or band in place and at the same time provide for the resiliency of the leg members, I punch out and turn in into the crotch that portion of the ring or band extending across said crotch, the said punched and turned in portion being shown at C as engaging the lower end of the body portion A and at C as engaging the inner faces of the upper portions of the legs B. It will thus be seen that by turning in these portions the resiliency of the legs is not interfered with, but onthe other hand the eiiiciency of the pin is greatly increased as the legs can be spread considerably, and inasmuch as the band as a whole surrounds the juncture of the body and legs, this point which is usually the weakest in an ordinary clothes pin is strengthened to such an extent that it is impossible to break the pin at this point, and the period of usefulness of the wooden clothes pin is thereby materially increased without materially adding to the cost of manufacture.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A wooden clothes pin having a metallic band surrounding a'portion of the body and a portion of the legs at the crotch, said band being split over the crotch and bent inwardly over the legs and over the bottom of the body portion respectively.
2. A clothes pin comprising the body and leg portions and a metallic band surrounding said pin at the juncture of the said. portions, the portions of said band being pressed inwardly to engage the bottom of the body portion, and the opposing faces of the leg portion.
3. A clothes pin comprising the body and leg portions, and a metallic band surrounding the pin at the juncture of said portions, the lower portions of the band at opposite points being pressed inwardly into the crotch of the pin and adapted to engage the bottom of the body portion, and the opposing faces of the leg portions thereby securely fastening the band upon the pin, substantially as described.
