EXTENSION-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed January 6, 1909. Serial No. 471,026.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. WrIoNN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of ashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tables of the above type and aims primarily to provide guide means of novel construction, adapted to support the bearing members of the adjustable table top sections.
A further object resides in the provision of an improved construction wherein companion table top sections are connected for simultaneous movement.
Further objects will be set forth as my description progresses and those features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts, in which my invention resides, succinctly defined in my annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated: Figure 1 is a top plan view of my table in extended position, parts being broken away. Fig.2 is a transverse section thereof. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, on enlarged scale, of one of the tracks or guides. Fig. 4 is an edge view of one of the track or guide sections, and Fig. 5 is a detail View on enlarged scale, illustrating more particularly one. of the link connections between the equalizing bar and an arm of one of the table top sections. 7
In carrying out my invention, I provide a suitable frame 1, which may be of any desired construction. I preferably provide the same, however, with a bottom wall 2, above which are arranged pairs of parallel supports 3, of wood or other suitable material. Supports 3 of each pair are spaced to receive therebetween the arms 4 of the table top sections 5, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
To effect an equal adjustment of the table top sections 5, I provide an equalizing bar 6, pivoted at 7 to the bottom wall 2 of frame 1, and connected by links 8 to one of the arms 4 of each table top section. Links 8 instead of being pivoted directly to the said arms 4, are preferably pivoted to depending members 9, fixed to said arms (see Figs. 2 and 5).
Arms 4 are provided with edge flanges 4', these being provided by suitably grooving the sides of said arms, which flanges constitute bearing members for engagement with the upper and lower surfaces of tracks 10, provided on the opposing side faces of the respective supports 8 of each pair.
Tracks 10 are composed of sections 10 which are supported for swinging, by screws 11, which when tightened hold said sections against swinging. Track sections 10 are arranged end to end with suitable separation and 111 horizontal alinement, see Fig. 3, and.
are provided with upper and lower edges or surfaces against which bear the bearing members 4 of arms 4. The sides of track sections 10 are inclined, as shown, whereby the outer end of one active edge or bearing surface of a track section projects well be yond the inner end portion of the other thereof, thereby providing bearing portions 10 which upon adjustment of the track sections, can be moved outwardly, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 to vary the width of the tracks.
By the construction illustrated, comparatively long bearing surfaces are provided on the .track sections, and they can be arran ed close together and yet be capable of being swung, as found desirable.
The life of a track constructed, as described, will be of long duration, for wearing of the edge portions 10 of the track sections and of the bearing members 4, which would result in play between said parts, and thereby permit the table top sections to sag, can be readily compensated for by loosening screws 11 and swinging the track sections to move the portions 10 outwardly, as previously described.
With the track sections thus adjusted, bearing members 4 will again snugly engage the same and hold the table top sections 5 firmly.
Frame 1 can be supported as on a central standard, 12, in any desired manner.
Various changes can be made in the minor details of construction, without departing from the spirit of my invention, as defined in my appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. An extension table comprising a frame, a table top section thereon, and means for supporting said table top section for adjustment on said frame including a track formed of independently adjustable sections arranged end to end.
2. An extension table comprising a frame, a table top section thereon, and means for supporting said table top section for adjustment on said frame including a track formed of swingingly supported sections arranged end to end.
3. An extension table comprising a frame, a track thereon formed of swingingly supported sections arranged end to end, a table top section, and bearing means on said table top section arranged to engage the upper and lower edges of said track.
L- An extension table comprising a frame, a track thereon formed of sections arranged end to end, means supporting said track sections for independent swinging, said track sections being provided with upper and lower bearing portions arranged to'be moved in an outward direction upon swingin of the track sections, whereby the track will be increased in width, a table top section, and a bearing means on said table top section, arranged to engage the upper and lower edges of said track sections.
5. An extension table comprising a frame, spaced supports thereon, tracks on said supports, said tracks being formed in pivoted sections arranged end to end, table top sections, arms secured to said table top sections, and bearing members on said arms engaging the upper and lower edges of said tracks.
Signed at Seattle, Vvashington this 23 day of December 1908.
