STEPHEN W. BALDWIN, OF BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOIR- TO AER-AM T. BALDWIN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
FOLDING TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 24, 1914.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN W. BALD- WIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to folding tables, and has for its object the obtaining of a light, strong, and rigid construction, and which is also of a graceful and ornamental appearance.
To this end, the invention consists in certain features of construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the table; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation showing the leg construction, and a portion of the table top; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the leg on line 00-00,
Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a similar section on line YY.
The top A of the table is preferably formed of a plurality of plies of veneer arranged with the grain in a transverse direct1on.
B is a depending rail secured to the top to stiffen the same, but arranged a sufiicient distance from the edge of the top to be concealed from view in the normal position.
C are the legs, which are formed of strips of wood, which at their lower ends are surrounded by a ferrule D and above this point are split longitudinally centrally in transverse planes, and having the several sections spread outward in the form of a truss.
E is a spacer block in the central portion of the leg, and which is notched at the corners to receive the spread sections and to be flush with the other surfaces thereof.
F is a spacer block at the upper end of the leg similarly notched, and preferably grooved to receive the tenon G of a cross bar H, said bar connecting pairs of legs into a common frame. The cross bar H is a thin strip of wood stiffened by the laterally-projecting portion I at its lower edge, glued or otherwise secured thereto.
J are hinges attached to the blocks F and secured to the table top through the medium sections ofmaterial, so that the total weight is very small. Furthermore, the combination of the legs, and other features of the table, are such as to produce a pleasing and ornamental appearance. 7
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A table comprising a top, a depending rail. secured to said top, pairs of foldable leg frames secured to said top within the space inclosed by said depending rail, each leg frame comprising legs formed of'a plurality of strips united at their lower ends, filler blocks at the upper end of said legs for holding said strips, spaced cross bars mortised into said filler blocks and formed of an L-shaped section, and hinges attached to said filler blocks and to the table top.
2. In a table, the combination with a top, of a leg comprising a plurality of longitudinally extending strips united at their lower ends and a block hinged to said top, said block having its corners recessed to receive said longitudinally extending strips flush with its outer surfaces.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN W. BALDWIN.
