CUSPIDOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
Application filed. April 30, 1909. Serial No. 493,182.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, JAMES HENRY GREG- ORY and F oREsT Marsi-r SHUMWAY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Farwell, in the county of Clare and State of Michigan, have invented a new and 1mprove Cuspiolor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.`
The invention is an improvement in cuspidors, and belongs to that class of such devices in which provision is made for discharging the contents of the bowl at the bottom when the cuspidor is washed out.
The invention has in view a cuspidor of this character having side portions hinged at the top to swing outwardly from the base, and provided with a hopper bottom inclining from the center toward each hinged side portion, to insure ready discharge and easy cleansing.
The invention further contemplates means normally tending to force the hinged side portions closed, anda ring, slidable around the neck of the cuspidor to spread the sides apart and hold them open against the tension of the said means.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,.in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a cuspidor constructed in accordance with our invention;l Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the body of the cuspidor substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar section of the cuspidor on the line 3 3 of Fig.'
' neck 11 and bowl 12, the latter having a flattened base of suiiicient extent to insure stability and provided with oppositely-arranged side portions 13 hinged at the top, as indicated at 14, to swing outwardly from the bottom, as shown in Fig. 6. The bowl is constructed with a hopper bottom 15 which inclines from the center downwardly to each of the hinged side portions 13. The hinged side portions 13 are extended a short distance above the hinges, as indicated at 13a,
where they incline upwardly and outwardly from the neck, as shown in Fig. 6, and incline inwardly toward the neck at each end, as shown in Fig. 3. Between the extended portions 13"1 and the neck of the cuspidor are fixed V-shaped springs 16, tending to force the side portions 13 closed. The springs 16, however, are not solely depended upon to perform this function, but springs 17 attached to the hopper bottom and to the lower portions of the hinged sides forcibly pull the hinged side portions to the bowl. Leak-proof joints between the hinged side portions and the bowl are insured by providing the contacting edges with tongues and grooves, as shown in Fig. 1, and lining the groove with a rubber or other gasket 18.
Around the neck of the cuspidor' is a rotatable ring 19 of suflicient diameter to inclose and freely move over the extensions 13a. This ring is shown to be longitudinally curved, with the convex face arranged outwardly to bear at the top and bottom edges of the funnel and bowl respectively. The ring 19 is provided with handles 20 by which it is rotated, and also with cams 21 on its inner face at diametrically opposite points, each cam having a central notch and designed to pass to the outside of the extensions 13a and thereby spread the hinged side portions 13 apart and hold them open against the tension of the springs 1G and 17, as when the cuspidor is being washed out. The free passage of the cams to the outside of the extensions 13a is insured on revolving the ring, by reason of the inwardly-inclined end portions of the extensions above referred to. The notches in the center of the cams are engaged by the central portions of the extensions 13a, as shown in Fig. 6, thus freely retaining the ring in place when the hinged side portions are fully opened. When the hinged side portions of the cuspidor are opened, the rapid discharge of the contents and thorough cleansing of the cuspidor is insured by the hopper bottom 15.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A cuspidor having side portions hinged at the to-p to swing outwardly at the bottom, and provided with a hopper bottom inclining from the center of the cuspidor toward the hinged side portions.
,2. A cuspidor having movable side port-ions, and a revoluble member encircling the cuspidor having means to move the side portions to an open position.
8. A cuspidor having a side portion hinged to swing outwardly at the bottom, means tending to force the hinged side port-ion closed, and a rotatable ring arranged around the neck of the cuspidor, having means to force the hinged side portion open against the tension of said means.
4. A cuspidor havinga sideportion hinged at the top to swing outwardly at the bottom, and provided with an extended portion above the hinge, and a rotatable ring surrounding the neck of the cuspidor, having a cam to engage the extension of thehinged side portion and force the side portion open.
5. A cuspidor having side portions hinged at the top, each side portion having an eX- tension above its hinge, a hopper bottom inclining downwardly from the center toward each hinged side portion, springs tending to force the hinged side portions closed, and a rotatable ring encircling the neck oi the cuspidor, having cams to engage with
