BILLIABD-CUIL Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
Application filed larch 20, 1909. Serial RCO. 484,708. 1
To all whom it my comm:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Hamilton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Cues, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to billiard cues, more particularly to the tip therefor, and has for its ob'ect to provide a novel cue tip that may be a ed to the billiard cue proper without the use of separate securing means.
In that type of billiard cues ordinarily used the tip portion is secured to the cue proper by. means of an adhesive, or the tip portion itself comprises a number of separate pieces which are held in assembled relation to the one by a screw or other similar fastening. The disadvantages of these means for securing the tip to the cue are that in the former instance the adhesive deteriorates with the constant use ofthe cue and eventually becomes loosened, and in the latter case the screw or other fastening means usually becomes loose with the result that the efliciency of the cue is greatly impaired. My invention seeks to overcome these disadvantages by providing a joint whereby the tip in its entirety is efiectlvely secured to the one and may not become disgiiilgiaged therefrom b the ordinary use of a ard cue. With ese advantages in view my invention is described in full detail in.
the accompanying specification, set forth in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown its preferred embodiment.-
In the illustrations :-Figure lis a side elevation of a billiard cue showin my improved tip in applied position. 2 1s a perspective view in detail of the tip, and Fig. 3 is a detail in'perspective of the cue end.
Referring more in detail to the several figures,.wherem like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts of the different figures shown, the numeral 1 designates the stick portion of an ordinary billiard cue, and 5 the tip portion thereof. The tip portion '5 comprises a substantially single plece of suchdesign in marginal contour as will readily enable its being appliedto the cue and form therewith a neat and even ap H portion-of the tip which is a apted to be secured to the cue'proper is cut awa on o posite sides, as at 8, to provide an o -stan in presence of two witnesses.
arance. That tapered and dove-tailed portion, the lar er and smaller ends of which are indicated%oy the numerals 6 and 7 respectively.
The one l'is provided with complementary fastenin means precisely of that design 'ust described of the tip 5, in that a dove-tailed and tapered groove is out within the body are indicated by the numerals 2 and ,4 re spectively. The bottom 3 of said groove is dove-tailedihead of the ti 5. The active end of the stick portion 1 is tted with a ferrule 1 whose'exposed surface meets flush with the surface of the cue proper, and said ferrule is cut-away on opposite sides whereby to register with the dove-tailed groove and are the tip. In afiixed position the tip 5 is a plied to the one. 1 in a manner that will e readily obvious; and in such application no additional securing means isapplied, as the union of the joint 1s dependent upon the frictional contact and peculiar disposition of the several surfaces of the parts. WhiIe'I have shown this particular type of joint to billiard cues, Ido not wish to be understood as limited to the specific details thereof, but rather reserve instead the right to make such ventlon to its end, and in makl changes to limit myself only to the disclosures in the prior art to which this invention pertains. v r
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A billiard cue comprising astick portion having one end provided wlth a dove-tailed and tapering groove, a ferrule fitted on said end and having its surface meeting flush withthe surface of the stick, said ferrule having cutaway. rtions on o posite sides in register with sand dove-tail groove, and
comprising a single piece and havin a dovetailed and taperi "head adapte to fit within the dove-ta ed groove of the stick and be frictionally held therein.
' In testimony whereof I aflix my WILLIAM-M. DUNN. Witnesses I. H. LEE,
WALTER J ones" thereof and whose larger and smaller endsperfectly even, as is also the surface of the commodate the head or securing means on changes therein as will better adapt the in-:
these a tip member for said stick, said tip member" signature,
