' BILL-HOOK. i
'- Speeicationof Lettersflratent:
' v App'iicanon inea December' 24, '190s serial N6, 469,153; n l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LfCoNRAD J. Kon'rz, af citizen of the 'United' Sta-tes, residing. .at Cleveland, in the` county of Cuyahoga" andv State oii'Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill-Hooks, of which l the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in bill-hooks of the .ty-pe or stylehaving a hook adapted inl use to be locked vagainst lateral rotation and-when not inuseto be raised and `rotated i to folding' position ragainstthe side of its support, all substanf tially as shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claims. r
In the accompanying drawings, Figure ll a perspective view ot the device complete, j showingv the'parts as in using relation, and- Fig'. 2' is a plain elevation' thereofzwith the, hook open in fulllines and folded inwdotted, A Fig. 3 isf'a; sectional elevation centrallythereof, and Figa i is a sectional elevation on line 3'/ Fig.' 2, cross 'section on line x-` m,li`ig.' 'The complete device as it goes to the trade and as used comprises a back-board or plater l B,fwhich maybeof any suitable material but e usuallyoi" cardboard,a hook'or hook mem- Y 'Vloer H, and a securing diskor plated) for 30 the hook, fastened by means tlieir'equiva-lent', at 'opposite i ter .to said board'or back B. The 'saiddis'k of eyelets 4e, or
' usually is of suitable sheet'inetal and the first 'and advantages in use not `and essential 'departure from the prior art as Vdisclosed in this device is in-th'e channel orgroove, or rib 2 const1tut1ng the groove.
Now, I am' aware that disks for 'plates with.
some sortof'chan'nel therein for a kindred purpose are not broadly new at this time, and I mightvmention number :of diiilerent patented devices showing such disks with groovesior channels. But all are materially diiferent from mine,l or rather, mine is ma. tei'ially different from all others` familiar to me and possesses features ofv constructionV 'present in 'any other device. ot this familiar. groove or rib 2 first' oi all is tapered uniformly from top lto bottom with a^ substan-' tially wedge like taper. At its lower end the' groove orchannel 1s Just large enough to accommodate the wire .stem or shank ot the hook or hook member, whileA the upper end of Said stem is fashioned with right angled extremity, or has its end bent outan'd Fig. '5 is a sides of its cenkind with which I am" Thus, to be specific, the said ward at right angles about the depth of the jtop of the said the ,Wiref itself. substantially haty sides,4 as Fig.' '-5, 'so'thatwhen theV same itl tinds 'itself' A sides which and left.
seen' especially jin within Comines at said' -ter orlquarterway lauound fromzthe back.- board, as seen in, thea-drawings,- a'nd then Adrawn downto engage the Blocking' and 'guiding fend 3' in the topofgroove 2. This done, .two things-are accomplished, that is, the hook is definitely centered. for service and rigidly. held as-against lateral swin-g'orplay,
ing relations with the disk and-'back which steinof the hookis held `frictionally: in .again drawn down byjhand'.. if
point by an inoision-,l-reoess, or other weak- @ning construction-of any kind'.' -On the contrary, said rib contributes.very materially to the-strength of the device as a son of itswedge shape and unitaryfand unL fact this construction is -unique and original in this particularly, thatsaid' rib has a straight continuous wedge, shaped back against'which the extremity 3 impinges and l shoulder, offset, or the like for it to drop into and stop whether it be fast or loose .'th'e hook is-abont aszfa'r down as seen' in Fig. by a' strong 'pull Sayi'past ,the linev of the rivetsj- In 4.so snugly atv. allptimeesl that when the. hook' is retired' and io lded,` dotted lines, i Fig. 2, it
that relation until ,9.5
It is to be noticed as .material to this construction that the rib 2 is integral'and entire .I its whole length and isnot weakened at any'f Patentedfocea 19095- groove less the thicknessr of i` Said' groove Ytherefore 'hasf' lend 3 venters the serve as rigid guides for the hook prevent'its' turning to either yfright or In use the 'hook is vfirst swungtofthe cenand at Ithesame time brought intoy tighten-A I appreciable .bending orf' j'fie'ldingjl therein Whole by `reabroken construct-ion from end to end.. In 10o' nolds by friction at all places and there is no 11e therein. In other Words the fastening comes exclusively in and by the Wedge shape or ineline of the groove in which the stem of the hook'with its right angled or rearward projection 3 engages, said projection lying of course in the same vertical plane as the hook portion h. And it will be noted that the rib 2 is rounded, see Fig. 5, so that the sharp sition.
end edges of the right angled extremity 3 Will take a -better bite or hold and tend to more effectively lock thehook rigidly in po- What I claim is: l. A bill-hook comprising a card and a plate secured thereto having a Wedge shaped channel, combined with a hook member having one4 extremity bent at an angle with its end face and endedges adapted to have slid- -able and Wedging engagement with said plate. l
and a metallic plate secured thereto having a grooved rib portion--struck up therefrom grooved and tapered uniformly from top to bottom with a substantially continuous Wedge like taper, combined'vvith a hook member of wire slidably and rotatably mounted Within vthe grooved portion of said plate and provided with an angled extremity having an end race with sharp end edges adapted to lie in close engagement with the side Walls of said portion and said extremity being bill-hook comprising a back-boardv esa-997" substantially as long as the deepest part of said groove, be tightly wedged against rotation and end movement in respect to said back-board.
3. A. bill-hookcomprising a board and al plate secured thereto having a struck-up grooveand rib `ot' gradual taper and'wedge formation on a straight unbroken line from top edge to bottom edge, saidgroove and rib having straight sides and a rounded back, combinedv With a hook member having its extreme upper end bent at right angles to permit Wedging engagement of its end face therein with said rounded back.
