Description

wan. ease:
El maznfo o UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES J. MITCHELL, OF NEWBURGI-I, NEW YORK.
BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburgh, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of boxes requiring a seal to be displayed in its entirety, thereupon, until the contents of the said box has become exhausted, and the object thereof is to provide a novel construction whereby the greater portion of the box top may be removed, to clearly display the contents thereof, and permit the seal to be displayed at the same time.
My invention resides specifically in the following features of construction, arrangement and operation, hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the box in its closed position, with the seal secured thereabout in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken therethrough, and, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the box, with its main cover or lid removed, and its supplemental cover thereon, displaying the seal in its entirety.
In the embodiment of my invention, as shown, I provide a box comprising a body 1, having a main longitudinal cover or lid 2, hinged by a flexible strip 4 along one longitudinal edge of the said body, and provided with a reduced end 3, terminating a short distance from the corresponding end of the body 1. Secured along its longitudinal edge, to one end of the box body 1, by a flexible strip 6, is a relatively short and transverse supplemental cover 5, provided with its opposite longitudinal edge reduced, to overlap the reduced end 3 of the main cover or lid 2, to permit the surfaces of the cover 2 and 5, to lie flush with one another in the closed position. In accordance with my invention, a seal 8 such as ordinarily used upon cigar boxes and the like, is pasted centrally and longitudinally of the supplemental cover or lid 5, thereby extending transversely of the box body 1, with its end extending downwardly upon the side, and terminating upon the bottom of said box body. Thus, when the box is opened, the supplemental cover 5 must first be raised, thus breaking the seal,

adjacent the surface of the box body, and permitting the main cover 2, to be raised. This cover, according to my invention, is then removed, by tearing it off from its binding strip 4, and the box body may thus be placed within a show case or the like, with its supplemental lid 5 held in the position shown in Fig. 3, thus displaying the greater portion of the contents of said box body, and also displaying the original seal 8 in its entirety, and intact, except for the break therein at the surface of the box body, and the end of said middle cover 5, caused by the raising of the latter. My invention is thus especially adapted in connection with cigar boxes, whereby the same may occupy a minimum space within a show case, to the advantage of the ordinary cigar box which has a one-piece lid extending the whole length of the box, and which must be turned back upon the box, thus taking up unnecessary room, in order that the seal originally placed upon the box of cigars, may be displayed in its, entirety when it is required.
Having fully described my invention, I claim:
1. A box of the character described requiring a seal to be displayed in its entirety until the contents of the box have been exhausted, comprising a body, a main cover or lid hingedly connected along one longitudinal edge of said body and adapted to be removed, and a relatively short supplemental cover or lid hingedly connected along its longitudinal edge to one transverse edge of said body and overlapping a portion of said main lid, for the reception of a seal extending thereover and around the said body, whereby when the main lid is raised, the seal must be broken substantially as described.
2. A box of the character described, requiring a seal to be displayed in its entirety until the contents of the box have become exhausted, comprising a body, a main longitudinal cover or lid hingedly connected along a longitudinal edge of said body and adapted to be removed therefrom, said main cover or lid being provided with a reduced end terminating a distance from the corresponding body end, and a relatively short transverse supplemental cover or lid hingedly connected along one of its longitudinal edges to one end of the said box body, and provided with its opposite longitudinal edge reduced and overlapping the said reduced end of said main cover or lid, its surface lying flush with the surface of said main cover or lid, and being adapted for the reception of a seal extending thereover and around the said body, whereby when the main lid is raised, the seal must be broken substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES J. MITCHELL.
