To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW JOHN FRED- RIKSON, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a resident of Smalands Taberg, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Cigarettes, Matches, &c., of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to cardboard boxes having a drawer adapted to slide into and out of an inclosing casing.

The invention has for an object the combination, with the outer casing, of a drawer provided with means for closing one or both ends thereof and so connected with the outer casing or box by means of a comparatively wide strip of a substantially non-stretchable material, as paper or the like, that the closure for the drawer is automatically opened and closed when said drawer is pushed out of and back into the box.

The invention has for its further object the utilization of the aforesaid strip of substantially non-stretchable material for sealing the end or ends of the box.

That my invention may be fully understood I will describe the same in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figurel isa plan view of abox, showing the sealing ends of the strip or strips of paper or the like projecting therefrom. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of said box, showing the drawer partly pushed out. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the drawer pushed out sufficiently to cause said strip of paper to open the closure. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show in plan and two side elevations a box the drawer of which has a closure'on the wider side instead of on the narrower side, the Figs. 4 and 5 showing the drawer partly pushed out and the closure or lid open, and Fig. 6 showing the drawer nearly pushed in and the lid closed. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a box with the drawer partly pushed out and showing a modified form of closure or lid for said drawer. Fig. 8 is a front end view of abox with the drawer partly pushed out and the lid open, said drawer having two reciprocally-movable closures or lids at each end oonstructed to form the end walls of the drawer, Fig. 9 being a side view of the box shown in Fig. 8; and

In connecting the drawer with a box h, Fig. 1, I paste a strip 1), of substantially nonstretchable material, preferably of paper, to

, the inside of one of the side walls of the box if the closure for the drawer is to open sidewise. This strip 1) is preferably of considerable width relatively to the side of the drawer s, so as to firmly connect its lid with the box and prevent the ready rupture of the connection when said drawer is pushed out of and back into its box. In practice I make this strip 17 of sufficient length to admit of the extensions 11 thereof being turned over the ends of the box and then have a margin 0 to be pasted onto said box, the strip thus serving as a seal for the box, and in order that this seal may be readily broken without danger of breaking the connection between the closure and the box I perforate the extension 0) of the strip 19 along the edges 19 19.

Of course when the strip 17 is pasted to the inside of one of the side walls of the box h, as in Fig. 1, the lid or closure k for the drawer is correspondingly located, as shown in Fig. 3, the strip b being pasted to the lid close to its hinge-joint, as shown, the drawer having a closure or lid at each end, as shown at k in full lines and at k in dotted lines, to which the ends I) b of the strip of paper 5 are pasted. This can readily be effected by pushing the drawers partly out of box h, Fig. 3, and then pasting the end of strip 1) to the lid 70 of drawer 8 close to the hinge-joint, the operation being repeated for the opposite end of the drawer.

When the drawer s has but one closure or lid and the box it is closed at one end, I may provide said drawer with a tongue 2 for pulling it out of and pushing it into its box, Fig. 3. Instead of applying the closure or lid to the narrow side of the box, as in Figs. 2 and 3, it

may of course be applied to one of the wider sides, as shown in Figs. 4 to 6, wherein. a drawer s is shown having a closure or lid 70 at one end only and provided with the tongue 2, Fig. 5, indicating the lid-actuating strip.

In Fig. 7 I have shown a modified construction of drawer and closure or lid, the former having its end beveled off and the lid 76 con structed to form the end wall for said drawer, 11 indicating the lid-actuating strip, or the drawer .9 may have its ends beveled off, as shown in Fig. 8, and provided with four reciprocally-movable lids or closures k k 7;. L, or such a drawer may be provided with but two closures or lids 70 7t, Fig. 9, wherein the lid-actuating strips are indicated at b and 5 respectively.

I have hereinbefore stated that I prefer to that it can be folded and held in its folded position without the use of paste or other fastening means. Such a blank is shown in Fig. 10 and partly folded in Figs. 11 and 12, from which a drawer such as shown in Fig. 9 can be obtained. lVhen the blank is properly folded, the portion 1 forms the end wall of the drawer, which will have reciprocally-mow able lids at one end only, the parts 2 and 3 form the side walls, while parts 4 4, the, form the bottom and top and the closures or lids. Each of the lids is formed of a main part 5, side walls 6, with laps 7, front parts 8 and 9, and end part 10. The laps 7 are partly separated from parts 8 and 9 by incisions, so as to readily fold, and parts 1 and 2 are partly separated in like manner. In main part 5 I form an angular or arcuate tongue 11, which faces the end part 10. The side parts 6 are to be folded upwardly at right angles to main part 5, laps 7 are to be folded inwardly at right angles to side parts 6, as shown in Figs. 11 and 12, then parts 8, 9, and 10 are folded inwardly over laps 7, so as to inclose the latter between the front parts 8 and 9, while end part 10 is pressed down against the main part 5 and slipped under the tongue 11, as shown make the drawer from a blank so constructed at the lower end of the partly-folded blank, Figs. 11 and 12.

Obviously ifv the upper end of the partlyfolded blank is folded as just described and then doubled upon itself, so that part 1 will form the end wall and parts 2 3 the side walls, the drawer will be completed and will have two reciprocally-movable lids at one end.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a cardboard box, of a drawer, a closure for the open end of said drawer, a comparatively wide strip of paperor similar flexible and substantially non-stretchable material secured to the inside of the box and to the outside of the closure close to its hinge-joint, so as to automatically open and close said closure when the drawer is pushed out of or into the box, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a cardboard box, of a drawer, a closure for the open end of said drawer, a strip of paper or the like secured to the inside of the box and to the outside of the closure close to its hinge-joint so as to antomatically open and close said closure when the drawer is pushed out of and into the box, said strip of paper having an extension for sealing the open end of the box, substantially as set forth.
