SKEIN-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1909.
Application filed April 6, 1909. Serial No. 488,218.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnn E. Vnrorrrzn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skein- Holders, of which the following is a specifi cation.
This invention relates to improvements in skein-holders and its object is to provide a device by which a number of skeins of silk or other yarn may be held in a separated position and so as to prevent t-angling, which will permit the separation from the skein, of single threads of yarn without disturbing others comprised therein, and which will preserve the skeins from injury or dirt, when not in use. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated and in which Figure 1, represents an elevation of the casing in which the skein holding frame is inclosed, Fig. 2, a section taken along the line 2-2 Fig. 1, Fig. 3, an enlarged elevation of the skein-holding frame, Fig. 4, a section taken along the line 1l: Fig. 3, and Fig. 5, a section taken along the line 5 Fig. 3, drawn to an exaggerated scale.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, let 2 designate a rectangular casing one side of which is provided with a transparent window 3 through which the skeins within the case may be observed. The casing 2, has at one of its ends, a lid -it which is hingedly secured to the body portion by means of hinges 5 and which is provided with a spring catch 6 which in cooperation with a projection 7 on the body portion, maintains the lid in its closing position. The interior of the casing is occupied by the rectangular skein holding frame 8 which is removably held in position within the case by means of a headed screw 9 whose threaded part projects through an aperture 10 in the casing and into a cooperatively threaded opening in the holder 3. The frame 8 is composed of. two parallel side rails 12 connected at their extremities by cross-pieces 13 and 14, the former of which carries the means by which the skeins are held in place while the other is formed in its sides with a plurality of transverse grooves, 15 which in practice, maintain the skeins against lateral displacement.
The fastening means above referred to are arranged in a number of sets, the members of which are disposed at opposite sides of the cross-piece 13. The members of each set are identical in construction and operation and their respective functions are to removably hold the opposite ends of a skein of yarn which is passed around the end piece 1 1. and through the grooves 15 formed oppositely in its sides. Each fastening device, designated in the drawings by the numeral 1.6, is designed to hold two skeins of yarn and is to this end, composed of two concentric disks 1'? and 18, whose circumferential portions are bent in opposite directions to facilitate the insertion of the skeins between their inner faces.
A screw-bolt 19, projecting through central apertures in the two disks is secured in a cooperatively threaded opening in the bottom of a cylintrical recess, in the cross piece 13, and a coiled spring 9.1 placed upon said bottom, engages the under side of the lower disk 18 for the purpose of maintaining it resiliently in contact with the upper disk whose outer face engages the head 19 of the bolt. To secure the skeins 22 upon the frame they are passed around the end piece 14:, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4c of the drawings and their ends are inserted between the divergent edges of the disks 17 and 18 of the fastening devices 16 comprised in one of the sets, between which they are held by action of the spring 21. Two of the skeins can in this manner, be secured at opposite sides of the disks comprised in each set, as is shown in Fig. 3, in which the frame carries three sets of fastening devices to accommodate 6 skeins of yarn. hen the skein is secured in the manner above described, its knotted extremity is cut, which divides the skein into a plurality of separate threads any one of which may be detached from the frame by pulling it at its looped end. hen the various skeins of silk or other yarn are secured upon the frame the latter is fastened in the casing 2 by means of the screw 9, so that by opening the lid 4, any one of the threads may be extracted from the skeins which are visible through the window 3, without removing the frame 8 from the casing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A skein holder comprising in combination with a suitable frame, clamping devices arranged at one of its ends, at opposite sides thereof and adapted to resiliently secure the extremities of a skein, doubled around its opposite end.
2. A skein holder comprising in combination with a suitable frame, fastening devices arranged at one of its ends, at opposite sides thereof and arranged to secure the extremities of a skein doubled around its opposite end, each of said devices comprising two opposed clamping members, a bolt, adapted to prevent excessive outward movement thereof and a spring arranged to resiliently maintain said members in engagement.
3. A skein holder comprising in combination' with a suitable frame, fastening devices arranged at one of its ends, at opposite sides thereof and arranged to secure the extremities of a skein doubled around its opposite end, each of said devices comprising two disks having central apertures, a headed bolt projecting through said apertures and secured in the frame and a spring engaging one of said disks so as to maintain it in resilient engagei'nent with the other.
4. A skein holder comprising a frame having recesses in one of its ends at opposite sides thereof, fastening devices within said recesses, adapted to secure the extremities of a skein doubled around the opposite ench of said frame, each of the said devices comprising two disks whose circumferential poring a frame, fastening device arranged at one of the ends thereof and adapted to secure the opposite extremities of a skein doubled around its opposite end, and a means for detachably securing said element Within said casing.
(3. The combination with a suitable openended casing having a window in one of its sides, of a skein holding element adapted to be placed therein and comprising a frame, fastening device arranged at one of the ends thereof and adapted to secure the opposite extremities of a skein doubled around its opposite end, and a means for detachably securing said element within said casing.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
