WATCH-POCKET FOR VES'IS.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LEWIS B. AVERY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Bridgewater township, in the county of I'Vashtenaw and State of Michigan, (postotfice, Clinton, Lenawee county, Michigam) have invented a new and useful Improvement in Patch-Pockets for Vests, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a watch pocket for vests, which pocket shall not retain dirt, dust, or fluff, and means for the removal of such dirt, dust, or fluff as may pass through the pocket to the interior of the vest. I attain this object in the man ner shown by the accompanying drawing, in which the figure shows the inside of the left front portion of the vest, the watch and lower pocket being shown by dotted lines.
In this invention, the watch pocket P has openings at its bottom A I) to allow dirt to fall through, thus keeping the pocket clean and the watch free from continuous contact with dirt. Any number of openings may be made in the bottom of the pocket, two or three perhaps being the most suitable number. In the present instance, three are shown, extending from A to B, from B to C, and from C to D. These openings are formed by leaving the entire bottom of the pocket open except atB and C Where its sides are held together by stitches or other suitable fastenings. The dirt that Would thus pass through the pocket would, of course, accumulate along the bottom edge E F of the vest, mostly near the corner F.

To facilitate its removal, an opening 1 1" is left between the lining L and the vesting V: that is, from 1" to q the lining is not sewed to the vesting; but from 1 to t, the lining and vesting are sewed together in the usual manner. If desired, however, two openings could be left, as from g to 1" and from q to 15, or, instead of either of these, an opening, as at 0 79, could be made higher up in the lining L. An opening along the lower edge E F would not be desirable; for While the dirt would escape automatically, any small articles that might inadvertently be put into the watch pocket would be likely to get lost through such opening. The bottom A D should be situated a little above, but not upon, the edge E F, to allow the dirt to pass entirely down through the bottom of the pocket.
In the figure, the lower pocket is shown; but, instead of this, the upper pocket (not shown) might have openings at its bottom, and be used as a watch pocket, with an opening at q 7".
As my invention, I claim In a vest, the combination of a watch pocket having openings at its bottom with the inner portion of the vest having a slit or opening 9 1" near the lower edge E F of the vest, to facilitate the removal of dirt that would pass through the bottom of the pocket to the said lower edge.
