UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID B. TIFFANY, OF XENIA, OHIO.
ALARM CLOCK CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,120, dated September 4, 1888.
Application filed February :24, 1888. Serial No. 261MB. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID B. TIFFANY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Xenia, in the county of Greene and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alarm'Olock Cases, of which the following is a specification, refer ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in alarnrclock cases, whereby I am enabled to re move the works from the case without tilting them forward in order to draw the hammer down through the oblong opening in the case, which tilting of the works in the case frequently causes injury to the dial.
The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then clearly pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a perspective view of an alarmclock embodying my invention, the bell being broken away to show the hammer. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the case, showing the oblong opening and the slot, and also the sliding lid for covering the slot.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the clock-case, B the bell, and C the hammer.
As usual, the case is formed with an oblong opening, D, through which the hammer passes and in which its carrying arm E vibrates. \Vith this construction it is evident the hammer cannot be withdrawn through the opening D without first tilting the Works forward. Now, in order that the hammer may be drawn straight out of the case with the works, I out aslot, F, from the outer edge of the case through to the oblong opening and close the slot by a sliding lid, thus preventing the entrance in side of the case of anything likely to injure the works, and also concealing the otherwise marred appearance of the case. As a convenient manner for forming ways for the lid to slide on, I turn the metal at each side of the slot upward and backward, as seen at 1 1 in the drawings.
Grepresents theslot-coveringlid,which consists simply of a piece of metal of the required size, having its side edges turned under and inward, as at 2 2, and provided with an upward ly-projeeting lip, l, at its outer end.
It will be seen that the lid will be held to the case in such manner as to slide freely by its inturned edges taking under the outwardlyturned edges or ways of the case, as clearly shown in Fig. l.
I prefer to make the slot F of gradually-increasing width from its outer to its inner end and shape the lid accordingly, as by this means the latters inward movement will be limited, and it will thus be prevented from coming in contact with the bell-arm.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An alarm-clock case having an oblong opening in which the bell-arm vibrates and a slot extending from the outer edge of the case to the said opening, in combination with. a sliding lid to cover the slot, substantially as described.
2. An alarm-clock case having an oblong opening in which the bell-arm vibrates and a slot extending from the outer edge of the case to said opening, the metal of the sides of the slot being turned upward and rearward, in combination with a lid whose side edges are turned downward and inward, substantially as described.
3. An alarm-clock case having an oblong opening in which the bell-arm vibrates and a gradually-widening slot extending from the outer edge of the case to said opening, the metal on the sides of the slot being turned upward and rearward, in combination with a lid increasing in width from its outer to its inner end, and whose side edges, are turned downward and inward, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID B. TIFFANY.
