IMPRovEMENT IN sTuDs. 0R BUTTONS.
Speeication forming part of Letters Patent No. l 78,842, dated J une'20, 1876; application tiled T0 all whom it may concern: t
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. DU'IEMPLE,
. l of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Studs or Buttons; and I do hereby declare that the followingi's a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, formingav part of this specitication.
vMy invention vconsists `in the improvement of shirt buttons or studs, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective View, with portion ot' back removed, ot' a studor button constructed according to my improvement. Fig. 2 is the front and post. Fig. 3 is the back and sec-V tion. Fig. 4 is a plan ot' front. Fig. 5 is a planet' back. Fig. 6 ijs un enlarged section 0n lines :1; zr, showing post D locked. Fig. 7 is a section on lines :c al', with the post D partially turned, in position for unlocking. Fig. 8 is the piece 0.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B are the front and ba'ck of t-he stud or button. D is a round post, soldered tothe front A. C is a tube, solderedto the back B. The post D is cut from its surface to center, apart of its length, to form the iiat 1L. d is a notch cnt at right angles to the post D,
' and at an angle of about thirty degrees to the iiat h. chamfered at s.
The corner of the post D is slightly The post D is ot' the right together.

is made the right thickness tofit easilyY the notch d. This piece is inserted and soldered in the side ofthe tube O, iilling about onehalt' its diameter, at the proper place to engage the notch d when the button is locked.
Aportion of the tube C is removed at e, to.
allow the spring 'r to rest on the fiat 7L ot' the -postD when said post is inpositiou. The
spring r is made circular, one end resting against the tube G, the others soldered to the back B.
Insert the post D in the Vtube C; turn until the'iiat h passes the piece o; then press the front and back together; the cha-intere presses the spring out, allowing the post to pass, when the recoil ot' the spring turns the post D, thereby engaging the piece 0 with the notch (l, which securely fastens the front vand back Hold the back B, and turn the front A in the direction, of the arrow; this will disengage the piece o from the notch d, and the post D may be withdrawn t'roin the tube C.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and -desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ilhe improved stud or button herein described, consistiug of thefront disk A, having adapted to be united -in the manner and for the purpose specified.
WM. R. DUTEMPLE.
