HARRY OWEN HUGHES, OF .SLATINGT'ON, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR ASSISTING IN THE SHOOTING 0F MARBLES.
Specification of LettersI'atent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1909.
Application filed June 18, 1909. Serial No. 502,915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY OWEN HUGHES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Slatington, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Device for Assisting in the Shooting of Marbles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to devices for assisting in the shooting of marbles, and it has for its object to provide a cap which is adapted to be disposed on the thumb of the player, the cap having an outwardly disposed stud intermediate of its ends, which is adapted to engage a marble when it is being held between the finger of the player and the cap covering the players thumb.
Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following complete description.
In this specification I will describe the preferred form of my invention, it being understood that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view showing my invention adjusted and in use; Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view of my device; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my device.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the cap 1 is shaped to fit the thumb 2 of the player, the cap 1 having a substantially flat surface 8, which is adapted to be disposed over the nail of the thumb of the player, this flat surface 3 having a projecting stud 4:, which is disposed intermediate the ends of the cap. The cap 1 is preferably made of resilient material, such as rubber, so that it may be adjusted on the thumb of the player and will be held securely in position when thus adjusted. The stud 4 is preferably made of rubber, and is preferably integral with the cap 1.
In using my invention, the cap is disposed on the thumb of the player with its flat sur face over the nail of the thumb, and a marble is then held between the first finger and the thumb of the player, which is covered by the cap, the stud being disposed over the marble so that when the first finger is pressed backwardly and the thumb is pressed forwardly the marble is held in position to be released with relatively greater force when the pressure of the thumb forwardly is increased relatively to the backward pressure of the first finger.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device for assisting in the shooting of marbles, an open body adapted to be disposed around the thumb of a player, and a stud projecting outwardly from the body.
2. In a device for assisting in the shooting of marbles, an open body of rubber adapted to be disposed around the thumb of a player, and a stud integral therewith projecting outwardly from the body.
3. In a device for assisting in the shooting of marbles, an open body having a fiat surface adapted to be disposed around the thumb of a player, and a stud projecting outwardly from the flat surface.
4;. In a device for assisting in the shooting of marbles, a cap adapted to be disposed on the thumb of a player, and a stud projecting ougwardly from the cap intermediate of its en s.
5. In a device for assisting in the shooting of marbles, a cap having a flattened side adapted to be disposed on the thumb of a player, and a stud projecting outwardly from the flattened side intermediate of its ends.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARRY OWEN HUGHES.
