Description

R. PENINGTON.
v CUFF.
APPLIOATION 11.31) mac. 21, 1908.
Patented Sept. 21, 1909 119i Cause:
UNITED STATES PATENT onnron.
ROBERT PENINGTON, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
curr.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 21, 1909.
Application-filed December 21, 1908. Serial No. 468,595.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT PENINGTON, a citizen of the United ,States, residing at Wilmmgton, in the county of Newcastle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuffs, of which the followin is a specification.
My invention rdlates to an improvement in cuffs and particularly to the turn-back cuff.
destroys the appearance of the shirt to which it is attached.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of arts which will be hereinafter-described an pointed out in the.claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vlew of the cuff before folding; Fig. 2 is a view showing the cuff attached to the sleeve of a shirt and folded into position; and Fig.
. 3 shows the cuff in one of its adjusted posi-,
tions.
A represents the cufi which is attached to the sleeve B in the usual manner by stitchmg. The cuff is provided along its ed es with openings orbuttonholes 1, 1, prefera ly three in' numberon each ede. The outer end of the cuff is capable of bemg folded and forms a flap 2,- which flap is adapted to be folded back upon the cuff proper and isprovidedfalong its outer edges with openings or buttonholes 3, which are ada ted toregister with the openings 1 on the e ges of the cuff proper." The flap 2 can be folded with re-v spect to the cuff so that the openings 3 will register with "the first or inner openings 1 on the cuff as shown in Fig. 2. When the edge thus formed becomes worn the flap can be folded with respect to the cufi so that the openings onthe flap will register with the next or centralv openings 1 formed in the cuff, thereby presenting a new edge of the cufi. Cuff buttons are adapted to be inserted through the openings on the cufi and flap for bringing the two edges of the cuff together, in other words, the button will pass through the registering openings of the flab and cuff proper for bringing the edges of the cuff together as in the ordinary manner of connecting the cuffs. In constructing the turn-back cuff in this manner I have provided a cuff which will outwearthe turnback cuffs as now used or those provided with the single attachment. With my invention I am enabled to adjust the flap with respect to the cuff. proper for/forming several different folding edges and presenting a new folding edge when the previous edge becomes worn.
It is "evident that more or less slight changes might be resorted to in the form and.
arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction herein set forth, but
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire .to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a cuff having a plurality of openings, of a flap'adapted to be folded upon the cuff, said flap havmg openings therein adapted to register wlth the openings in the cuff to permit of the flap be ing folded at different points.-
In testimony whereof I affix my in the presence of two Witnesses.
. ROBERT PENIINGTON.
