UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. WEBB, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHOW-CARD STAND.
Application filed November 25, 1908.
To all 'whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show-Card Stands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in show-card stands, the object being to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character adapted for display and advertising purposes.
A further object of my invention is to provide cooperative means whereby the metallic edge of a show-card forms a part of the card stand. And a further object is to provide interchangeable parts of different lengths in order that cards of different sizes may be displayed.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in such a novel construction and combination of parts all as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a rear elevation showing the back of a show-card and the members of a card stand. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the supporting brace of the stand. Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively detail side and rear elevations, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view.
Referring now to the drawings, l indicates the show-card and 2 the metallic channel edges thereof. The members or edges 2 are U-shaped in cross section, the opening in the same being of a sulicient width to receive the card l and the ends 3 of the detachable stretchers or reinforcing strips 4. The stretcher ends 3 are preferably tapered as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the material used for the stretchers being preferably soft wood. One of the channel edges 2 is provided with a central perforation 5 adapted to receive a hook 6 provided at the end of the supporting wire brace 7. Ordinary paper fasteners 8 are used to secure the channel edges 2 to the card l, said edges being provided with perforations 9 to receive said fasteners. In order to properly form the card 1 which may be of thin paper, each stretcher 4 is inserted in the opening between Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1909.
Serial No. 464,451.
the card l and one side of the channel of an edge 2 as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l. The stretchers 4 are then rocked into the full line position or approximately so, the final position of the stretchers depending on their length. It is obvious that if the stretchers are slightly longer than shown that they would not assume the vertical position and still be held securely in position owing to the acuteness of the angle at 10 of the locus of movement 11. A stand is thus formed having suflicient stability to rest on the floor 12 of a show window. For different sizes of cards a corresponding series of interchangeable stretchers may be provided.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be minor changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a show-card stand, in combination with a rectangular card having two metallic edges secured thereto, a centrally disposed supporting wire brace pivoted to one of said edges and a plurality of detachable stretchers or reinforcing strips interposed between said edges, substantially as described.
2. In a show-card stand, a rectangular card and U-shaped metallic members secured to opposite edges thereof, the opening of said members being wider than the thickness of said card, a supporting wire brace pivoted to one of said members, and stretchers provided with ends adapted to engage said members at the openings thereof, substantially as described.
3. In a show-card stand, a substantially rectangular card, U-shaped channel edges coeXtensive with two opposite edges of said card and secured thereto, one of said channel edges being provided with a central perforation adapted to receive a wire supporting brace, and stretchers having ends adapted to engage each of said channel edges to reinforce said card, substantially as described.
4. In a show -card stand, a card substantially rectangular in form, U-shaped metallic channel edges secured to said card by means of fasteners adapted to pass through perforations provided in said card and in said metallic edges, one of said metallic edges being provided with al centrally disposed perforation, a Wire supporting brace provided with a hook adapted to engage said perforation, and a plurality of detachable stretchers provided With tapered ends adapted to engage said channel edges, substantially as described.
5. In a show-card stand tWo metallic edges U-shaped in cross section secured to the opposite edges of a rectangular card, a supporting brace pivoted to one of said metall-ic edges and interchangeable stretchers adapted to reinforce said card by frictional engagement with said metallic edges, substantially `as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed Iny nan'ie to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN C. I/VEBB.
