ANSON F. WHITE, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
CLOSURE FOR BOTTLES, JARS, AND THE LIKE RECEPTACLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1909.
Application filed May 8, 1908. Serial No. 431,642.
lo bottles, jars, and like receptacles and closures therefor, and its primary object is the provision of a receptacle and closure which shall be simple, durable and eflicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a receptacle and closure constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on a plane extending vertically and centrally through the receptacle and closure.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, l designates the body and 2 the neck of my improved receptacle. At its upper end the neck is provided with a horizontally disposed flange 3. An annular member 4- is secured to the edge of the flange 3 and projects above and below the same. The upper edge of the annular member 4: is turned down, as at 5, to add strength and rigidity thereto. That portion of the member 4: which projects above the flange 3 forms in conjunction with the flange a seat for the closure, which is in the form of a stopper 6. The stopper 6 is provided with a lower reduced extension 7 fitting in the neck 2, and in its side wall with an annular recess 8 for the reception of a gasket 9, said gasket resting upon the flange 3 to provide a liquidand air tight connection between the stopper and the bottle. On its upper side the stopper 6 is provided with a pair of integrally formed lugs or ears 10 through which the bail 11 of a locking device passes. The lever 12 of the locking device is connected with the bail 11 through the medium of eyes 13 formed in the lever and through the medium of journals 1% formed on the bail. The ends of the lever 12 are formed to provide journals 15 which pass through bearing openings 16 in the member 4: to pivotally secure the lever to the bottle.
Changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a receptacle provided with a flange, of an annular member secured to the flange and projecting above and below the same, a stopper for the receptacle, a lever pivotally mounted upon the member, and a bail secured to the stopper and to the lever.
2. The combination with a receptacle provided at the upper end of its neck with a horizontally disposed flange, of an annular member secured to the edge of the flange and projecting above and below the same, said flange and member forming a seat, a stopper mounted upon the seat, a lever pivotally mounted upon the member, and a bail secured to the stopper and to the lever.
3. The combination with a receptacle provided at the upper end of its neck with a flange, of a member secured to the flange and forming in conjunction therewith a seat, a stopper mounted 011 the seat, a lever pivotally mounted upon the member, and a bail secured to the stopper and to the member.
a. The combination with a receptacle pro vided at the upper end of its neck with a horizontally disposed flange, of an annular member secured to the edge of the flange and projecting above and below the same, the upper edge of the member being turned down to add strength and rigidity thereto, said member and flange forming a seat, a stopper mounted upon the seat, a lever pivotally mounted upon the member, and a bail secured to the stopper and to the lever.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANSON F. WHITE.
Witnesses JOHN R. CARSEY, AUGUST PFINGSTON.
