BOTTLE-STOPPER.

Be it known that l, THEoDoEE SCHWEE, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful lmprovement in Bottle-Stoppers, ot which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements on Patent No. 486,359, issued to Harry B. Stewart, Theodore Schwer and Joseph E. Blake, November 15, 1892.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.

Fig. lll is aview of the nut in which the tightening screw works. Fig. lV is a top view with the bail removed. Fig. V 1s a vertical section of the cork, with the nut and screw removed.
Referring tothe drawings, 1 represents the neck of a bottle, 2 a rotatable band tting the neck of the bottle, beneath the head; 3 a bail having inturned lower ends 4., fitting in the eyes 5 of a lever 6, the ends 7 of the lever having pivotal connection with the band 2. These parts are all the same as in the patent referred to.
8 represents the cork, which is preferably made of porcelain, with a head or shoulder 9, beneath which is an annular groove l0 to receive a washer or gasket 11, that forms a tight Joint between the cork and bottle. B v providing the groove 10, the gasket is held to the cork so as not to he lost during the handling of the bottle, when open, which is particularly intended for weiss-beer. The cork has a socket 12, with an enlarged, upper end 13 within which fits a nut 14 that rests on the bottom of the enlargement, as shown at 15, Fig. II. Within the nut is a screw 16, the lower end of which enters the socket 12, and
the upper end of which is perforated to receive the bail 3, as in the patent mentioned. The operation of the use of the stopper is the same as that described in said patent.
The nut 1 4 is firmly and securely held in the enlargement ofthe socket 'by means of Babbitt-metal, or other filler, poured in, after the nut is in place, through a groove 17, see Figs. IV and V. The lower part of the enlargement has recesses 18, which receive the filler, and the nut has a groove 19, which receives the filler, so that a very strong union is made between the cork and nut, and the latter is held from moving relatively to the cork.
I claim as my invention-H 1. In a bottle stopper, in combination with the bail, lever and band; a cork having a socket with an enlarged, upper end, a nut tittiug in the enlargement of the socket, a filler surrounding the nut, and a screw fitting in the nut and connected with said bail; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. ln a bottle stopper, in combination with the bail, lever and band; a cork having a socket with an enlarged, upper end with recesses 18, a grooved nut fitting in the enlargement of the socket, a filler surrounding the nut, and occupying said recesses and said groove, and a screw fitting in said nut and connected to said bail; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a bottle stopper, in combination with the hail, lever and band; a cork having a groove 10 to receive a gasket 11 and havinga socket with an enlarged upper end having a groove 17 and recesses 18, a nut fitting in the enlargement of the socket and having a groove 17, a filler 19, and a screw I6 fitting in said nut and connected to said bail; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
