TROUSERS STRETCHER AND HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1909.
Application filed October 7, 1908. Serial no. 456,675.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers Stretchers and Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of apparel apparatus, and more particularly to trouser stretchers and hangers, and has for an object to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive device of this character by means of which trousers may be conveniently and effectively stretched.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the inven tion.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a top elevational view of the present invention showing its application to a pair of trousers, Fig. 2 is a similar view, the trousers being omitted, Fig. 3 is an end view, Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 2, Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a garment stretcher and hanger 10 consisting of a longitudinally disposed rod 11 provided with a right hand threaded portion 12 adjacent to the rearward end, as shown. Outwardly of the threaded portion 12, the rod is provided with a flattened portion 13 which receives an operating handle 14. Outwardly of the handle 14, the portion 13 of the rod is provided with a passage. 15 which receives a supporting ring 16 by means of which the rod may be hung to a suitable support as is obvious. The rod is provided with a reduced forward end portion 17 and at the outer extremity, this portion of the rod is provided with a left hand thread 18 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The reduced portion 17 of the rod receives a sleeve 19 riveted to the portion 17 as shown at 20, and outwardly of this sleeve the portion 17 receives a member 21 loosely connected with the portion 17, and at each side this member isprovided with spaced ears 22 in which are formed alining apertures 23. The member 21 is held against sllding movement upon the portion 17 of the rod by means of a sleeve 24 similar to the sleeve 19 and riveted in a similar manner as shown at 25. The portion 17 of the rod also receives a chuck block or bearing 26 provided with a threaded portion 27 for engagement by the left hand threaded portion 18 previously described. The chuck block or bearing is riveted to a transversely disposed metallic plate 28 provided adjacent to its ends with elongated slots 29. Arranged in parallel relation to the plate 28, there is shown a similar plate 30 having its end portions turned upwardly and inwardly as shown at 33, these portions being slightly curved longitudinally to present convex upper surfaces. At their inner ends, the portions 33 are bent downwardly as shown at 31 and 32 respectively, engaging the upper surface of the plate 30. The portions 33 are provided with slots 34 extending longitudinally thereof, and registering with the slots 29, as shown. One pair of these registering slots 29 and 34 extend through the outer end of the portion 33 and plate 30, as shown at A. The pairs of slots 34 and 29 thus receive vertically disposed bolts having portions 42 arranged for engagement in the slots 29, and threaded portions 43 which receive clamping nuts 44.
The ears 22 receive the inner ends of arcuate members 46 and 47 respectively provided with bolts 48 engaged in the apertures of the ears 22 whereby the arcuate members are mounted for pivotal movement. The outer ends of the members 46 and 47 respectively are'pivotally connected to the bolts 40 as shown.
The threaded portion 12 of the rod receives a member 49 provided with an inter nally threaded portion 50, and this member is also provided at each side with spaced cars 51 which are also pivotally connected with arcuate members 52 and 53 by bolts 54 and 55 respectively, these members carrying bolts 54 and 55 respectively similar to the bolts 40 previously described and which are engaged with plates 56 and 57 respectively similar to the plates 28 and 30, the plate 57 having upwardly extending portions 57 at its extremities and inwardly and clownwardly slanted portions 57, the portions being slotted as shown to receive the bolts 54 and 55. The plate 56 is also provided with a dependingychuck block 58 which is provided with a passage 59 to slidably receive the threaded portion 12 of the rod 11. It will thus be observed that the plates 28 and 30 may be separated for engagement of the legs of trousers therebetween, and that the legs of the trousers may also be engaged between the plates 56 and 5 7. The portions '57 as shown, produce upwardly and outwardly inclined camlaces, while the portions 33 produceupwardly and inwardly in- 'clined 'cami'aces. After the trousers have been placed in position, handle 14L is grasped, and pulled, while the transverseportions are pushed away'from the operator by one hand. This draws'the shaft 11 longitudinally with respect to the plates 56 and 57, spreading the members 52 and 53fto bring the bolts 54 and 55? upwardly over the portions 57 the plates 56 and 57 being thus clamped together. This operation alspdr'aws the members 46 and 17 inwardly, moving the bolts 10 upwardly and inwardly over the cam portions 33 and-clamping the plates 28 and 30 together, these plates being engaged by the toe of the operator to hold them still, as will be understood. After this has been done, the handle 14 is rotated, the shaft 11. being thus revolved to screw the threaded portion 18, into the block 21 and at the same time,
7 screwing. the threaded portion 12 of the shaft through the member 49 By reason of the opposite threading of the portions 12 and 18, the two sets of plates are moved away from each other to place thetrousers under tension.
As shown in the drawings, there is a set nut B engaged with the portions 12 rearward of the plates 56 and '57.
What is claimed is I v p 1. A garment stretcher comprising a rod,
pairs of plates connected withthe rod, said plates being arranged to receive a garment therebetween, said rod being movable longitudinally with respect to the plates, and cam mechanism connected with the plates and with the rod for operation to clamp the plates against the garment by mo'vement of 5 the rod with respect to the plates.- J
2. A garment stretcher comprising a rod, pairs of plates connected with the rod, said plates being arranged to receive a garment therebetween, said rod being movable longi-- tudinally with respect to the plates, c'am' mechanism connected with the plates, and
with the rod foroperation to clamp the plates against the garment by movement of the rod with respect to the plates, a threaded member carried by one of the platesand a portion adjacent to one of its ends, a movable member engaged with the threaded portion, a garment engaging clamp slidably engaged upon said threaded portion, expansible members between said member and saidclamp respectively, a second, member loosely engaged with sald rod, means for holdlng said last named member against sliding move ment, a second garment engaging clamp slidably arranged uponsaid rod, connections be- I 60 V threaded head carried by the rod for engage-V V the rod tween said clamp and said second named 7' member, and means carried by said last named clamp for. locking engagement at V times with said rod. In testimony whereof I in presence of two witnesses.
