To all whom fit may concern:

lle .it known that l, OWEN JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, in the count-y of lrristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful [improvements in Stenciling Apparatus; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful inuliroveinents in stenciling apparatus and comprises a frame having hinged sections, one of which is provided with series of openings in the marginal edge of which letters, numerals or characters are adapted to be positioned, suitable means being provided for holding the same in position and between which hinged sections a paper may be held to receive the stenciling which is accomplished by moving the brush over the letters, numerals or characters, causing the latter to be printed through the openings therein.

The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specically defined in the appended claims.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which :h

Figure l is a perspective view of my improved stenciling apparatus showing series of stenciling letters positioned in readiness for printing upon a paper interposed between the two sections which are hinged together. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the frames opened. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the frames folded. Fig. 4L is an enlarged detail View showing' the manner of holding the letters, numerals or characters between the marginal edges of the openings in one of the hinged sections. Fig. 5 is an enlarged det-ail view of the plate which holds the letters, numerals or characters from passing entirely through the openings, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view in perspective of one of the letters.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame of the device provided at its lower end preferably with pigeon-holes B in which the letters, numerals or characters may be conveniently held in readii'iess for use.

C and D designate two fran'ie sections which are hinged together at E, one of said sections D having a series of parallel openings F therein, and G designates a plate provided with a series of parallel openings or slots G which are adapted to register with the openings F formed in the section D, said slots or openings G being smaller than those in the frame D, thus leaving a portion of the plate about the marginal edge of each slot in the latter which partially closes each slot F and which is provided for the purpose of preventing the letter plates J, in which the letters, numerals or characters are stenciled, from passing entirely through the slots in the section D. The marginal edge of each opening in the section D is provided with notches H arranged in pairs and opposite each other. Each of said letter plates J is provided with a lug K at its opposite ends adapted to register with the notches formed in the opposite edges of the openings F, as shown in the drawings, and provided for the purpose of holding said letter plates against a lateral movement when a brush'is drawn over the same in the act of printing through the opening therein. Each of said letter plates has a flange about one edge adapted. to overlap the adjacent letter plates so as to prevent the formation of an open seam through which paint or ink might pass.

In order to hold the various plates in place, l provide a Wire which is preferably of rectangular shape and conforming to the shape of the opening in which the series ot letters are to be held and designated in the drawings by letter N. Sait wire should be preferably of a strong metal and pref rably resilient and provided at each end with a coiled spring N.' Socket members, designated by letter O, are mounted one adjacent to each end of an opening F and each is adapted to receive one of he coiled springs N.

n operation, when it is desired to print from the apparatus, a sheet of paper upon which the printing is to be made is inserted between the two frame sections C and D. rlhe various letter plates are inserted in the frame D in the manner shown with the op posite edges of the plates bearing the letters, numerals or characters overlapping one another so that the only paint or ink appearing upon the sheet to be printed upon will be that which is applied through the openings representing the letters, numerals or characlors. The stencils are held in place by the uoper and loiver edges of the plates being held by the Wire N. By drawing a. brush to which paint or inlr has been applied back and. 'forth across the series ot letters, numerals or characters, the printing may be quichly el'lected, the letters, etc. being securelj7 held. in place by the apparatus shown and described. By swinging the frame sections apart, the printed sheet may be removed and others printed in a similar inanner. in the event of it being flesired to utilize the apparatus merely as a. display bulletin .vhen not desired 'for use for stenciling, the letters, numerals or characters may be adjusted in position in the section D and any color of paper inserted between the fan'xcs and caused to display the reading through the openings in the letters.

W'hat l claim to be neW is l. it stenciling apparatus comprising a frainc,hinged sections mounted thereon, one of said sections having a series of openings provided with notches in the ends thereof, letter plates mounted in said openings and having projections engaging said notches, whereby said plates may be held against lateral movement, a plate positioned against the inner face of said section with openings therein and provided with slots in registration with said openings but of smaller size and designed to prevent the letter plates passing through said openings, and means cooperating with said slotted plate for holding the letter plates in place, as set forth.
