Patented le 24, race. Serial No. arrear- 932,307. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 16, 1908. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwls C. MYERS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Type-Whiting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention-relates primarily to margin clamp 01' margin roll devices for visible writing machines. Its chief characteristic is that the margin clamps are carried on tothe printing point by means of its end supporting arms 13, arms lei, rock shaft 15, arms-l6 projecting from the rock'shaft and slotted link l7, when the release lever is drawn forward. There is a slotin the link 17 that is engaged by a pin 18 in the end of the release lever that extends below the axis 19 of the latter. The foregoingis the gem eral construction of the paper feed device comprised in the invention ofEdward B. Hess and disclosed in his before mentioned application.
nally slotted cylinder disposed below the line of print and adapted to be rocked in bearings to carry the margin clamps away from the platen.
The invention is shown combined with paper feed devices constructed, in general, in accordance with the invention of Edward 53. Hess. Special means for rocking the slotted margin clamp support is however my invention.
The organization depicted in the drawings is substantially the same as that shown in the application of Edward B. Hess Ser. No. 405,350, filed November f3, 1907.
In the-accompanying drawings: Figure l is a transverse section taken immediately inside the right hand end plate of the car; ring-e: Fig. 2, a detail front elevation showing the margin clamps or rolls and the hlshaft which carries them: Fig. 3,-a detail perspective view of one endof the hollow slotted shaft: Fig. 4, a cross section therethrough: and Fig. 5, a detached view showing one of the slidesby which a mar '11 clamp is carried.
1 isthe platen; 2 and 3 front and rear feed rolls carried by a frame i and suspended by springs 5, one at each end of the platen, connected at their upper ends to the front ends of rocking arms 6,7 carried by a rock shaft 11. The arm 6 at the right hand end of the platen has, in its lower edge,a recess with an inclined face cooperating with a pin 9 in the side of arelease lever 10 pivoted at 19. In the normal position shown in the drawings, the forward ends of thearm i3. 7, are raised and the springs 5 maintain t e front and rear feed rolls in operative" relation to the 'olaten. When the releaselever is drawn forward the front ends of, the ari-ns 5,7 are allowed to fall thereby permitting the feed rolls to move away from the platen. l2 isa scale or that is moved shown) ofthe carriage is a'hollow cylinder or shaft. provided 'in its front face with a longitudinal slot, 21. At each of its ends is secured ring having a heari A upon which pins the cylndcnroc in suit able bearings ill the side platesof' the carriage. Fitted the hollow cylinder are slides 24 that may be made of sheet metal formed into the shape indicated in Figs. and 5; that isto say, each has a-oylindrical part fitting within thecvlinder and fric- 'tionally movable therein, fiat 26 that extend through the formed vith hearings 536 i ilar to hinge butts? pivoted in which by leans of a pivot pin 27 is a sheet metal plate 28 having or roll 29 and provided between the roll and its bearing with a. knob or hand piece 30 by cylinder 20. A coiled sprlng 31 isapplied to the pivot pin Q'Zand by its reaction tends to iirge the ma rgin roll against the front face i of the platen. I It is preferred as indicatedin Fig. 1 that the slot 21 shall be below ahorizontal plane passing through the exis of the cylinder-so'that dirt of erasure, etc, will not enter the slot. This affords a cheap and ver Y ctlicient construction of margin clamps ad jnstable lon itudinally of the platen. Where it is desirab e to throw of? the margin clamp when the paper feed devices are released, it is only necessary to impart a rocking move- .shown when this rocking movement occurs, the bearings 26 move downwardly and lov reason of abutment of the plates the periphery ofthe cylinder 20, the margin clainpswillbe moved away from the face of the platen. This rocking movement may be ollows. Adjacent its right hand effected as I? end cylinder 20 is'provided. with a vertical Extending between the side plates (not carrying in its upper end a niarsin clamp or which it may be shifted longitudinally of the 28 against nie'nt to the cylinder 20. in the construction l 1 projection '32 to which at 33-ispinned the;
