Be it known that I, HERBERT H. STEELE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Marcellus, in the county of Onondaga and. State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- TWriting Machines, of which the following is a specification. p
My invention relates to mechanism for typewriting machines and its general object is to provide improved mechanism of the class stated.
To the above and other ends which will 'hereinafter appear, my invent-ion consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention has been embodied in mechanism which is especially adapted to controlling a plurality of sheets of paper are ranged side by side on a single platen, and comprises means for feeding the sheets separately and also for holding or clamping o'ne of the sheets while another 'of the sheets is being fed, the feeding and controlling means for the two sheets being entirely distinct and independently operated.

The form of the invention shown in Figs. l to 5 will first be described. As shown in Figs. 1 to 3, grooved track-Ways 1 are fixed on the frame of the machine, said track- Ways receiving anti-friction balls 2 `which cooperate witli a grooved slide bar 3 comprised in a platen frame, carrier-or carriage which further includes end bars 4. Pivoted at 8 in pressure rollequipped with two pairs and each pair of arms supporting a shaft 10 carrying the sections 1l of a main feed roller which is constantly pressed toward the platen by springs 9a' coperating with the arms 9. .Pivoted at l2 to each bracket 7 is an arm 13,`each pair of arms 13 supporting a shaft 14 whereon are sections 15 of a secondary feedroller which is constantly pressed toward the "platen by springs 16. `The platen provided at each end'with a spring-pressed paper apron or deflector 17 of the usual construction.
It will be understood from what has been said of Figs. 1 and 2 that there are two sets of main and two sets of secondary feed rollers, one set of each being associated in the usual way and arranged to coperate .with one end or half of the platen. By means of each set of main feed or pressure rolls and the associate set of secondary rollers, together with the paper deiector through which the rollers coperate with the platen, a sheet may be fed around each end of the platen toward the printing point.
Each set of paper feeding and controlling devices, comprising main .and .secondary feed rollers and paper deilector, provided with releasing means, the releasing means for the left-hand setbeing controlled by de vices mounted outside the left-hand end bai" 4, while thc releasing means for the righthaiid set are controlled by devices mounted outside the right-hand end bar 4. Barney, Serial No. 403,531, filed November' 23rd, 1907 and which comprises an arm 21y secured by a screw 22 to the rock shaft, said arm being actuated by an arm prvoted tothe arnijl at 24 and provided with a finger piece 25, said arm 23 being piroted at 26 to an arm 27 p'ivoted at 28 to the adjacent end bar 4.

locking the parts in the Fig. 4 position.
During the movement of the partsfrom the Fig. 3 to the Fig. 4 position the rock shaft 18 is rocked, causing the lugs 19 to act on and rearward to release the main feed roller, said arms 9 acting against the arms 13 to release the secondary` feed roller and the paper deflector.
A rod 29 arranged above the platen and extending lengthwise thereof is secured at its ends to the.end bars 4, said rod support` ing paper fingers which may be of the usual Monarch pattern comprising each a hub 30 engaging the rod 29, an arm 31 curving ferward over the platen from the hub 30 and 'i carrying a spring pressed guide finger 32 and also carying a roll carrier 33 pivoted 34 and supporting a pressure roll 35 which I cooperates with the platen throughV an open ing in the guide linger 32. As shown in Fig. 3 the carrier 33 providesa bearing for a spring plunger 3G, the hubl whereof cooperates with cam faces 37a on the arm 31 to maintain, the roll 35 inor out of'opcration. ln the. present instance four paper lingers are mounted on the rod 29 and arranged in pairs one pair operating to guide and control the work sheet at the left asit passes abovethe printing line up over the platen from the left4hand set of paper feed-I ing and controlling devices heretofore described which guide said sheet from the introductory sidel of the platen around and under the same to within a short distance pf the printing line at the front of the platen.A The right-hand pair of paper fingers coperate with .the right-hand work sheet. As ordinarily constructcd'the paper lingers arc slidable along the supporting rod 29 but in the present instance said paper fin- .gcrs are preferably fixed on said rod as by pins' which pass through the hubs 30 and rod 29 and secure their respective paper fingers in position to cooperate with the side margins of the work sheets. An erasing plate or shelf 38 is mounted on the rod 29 in the usual or any suitable way and extends substantially throughout the length of the platen, said erasing plate underlying the arms31 and inclining downward and forward from the rod 29 over the platen and to within a very short distance of the surface thereof.
Referring now' to the novel devices to which my invention more particularly relates, these comprise in the Figs. 1 5 conf Vstruction a plurality of clamping or gripping elements `which coperate with the right-hand end portion of the erasing plate 38 to grip the paper and are automatically .controlled by the right-hand releasing means operated from the righthand nger piece 25, said linger piece'also operating to throw oli' the two right-hand pressure rolls 35 at 'the same time that it releases or throws off the right-hand main and secondary feed y rollers. To provide a support for the clampl separate pieces but as herein shown are part of a clamping membpr 4l preferably formed of sheet metal and supported on the rock shaft 40. Said clamping element comprises a plurality of parallel spring lingers 42 which curve downward and rearward over the erasing shelf 38, live lingers or clamps 42 being shown inthe present instance. The member 41 further comprises portions 43 which are curled around the rock shaft 40 A and ret-eige pins 44 which hold the member 41 in fixed relationship with the shaft 40. Each of the lingers 42 is provided preferably witha sheath 45 of rubber or the like s0 aa to improve and facilitate the gripping or clamping co-action between said fingers and the erasing plate. At its left-hand end the rock shaft 40 projects beyond the hub or i bearing 39 to receive a forwardly extending crank arm 46, said cranlg arm being provided With a hub 47 which is secured by a set screw 48 to the rock shaft. 'lhe righthand end of the rock shaft 40 extends outward beyond its bearing 39 to provide a support for a lever 49, said lever having a collar 50 in which is threaded a set screw 50 for ,fixing the'lever to the rock shaft. The forward arm of the lever 49 corresponds to the crank arm 46. The rear arm of the lever 49, as'best appears in Figs. 3 ancl4, extends backwardjabove the platen, and lits rearend pivotally supports at 51 a depending link 52 the lower end whereof is pivotallyconnected at 53 with a crank arm 54 projecting forward from the right-hand re- .leasing rock-shaft 1S. As shown in Fig. l thecrank arm 54 is provided with a hub 55 which -sinrounds said rock shaft 18 and receives a securing screw 5G.

It will be apparent'from a consideration of Fig. 4 that when the parts are held or set as therein illustrated the feed rollers and pressure rolls will be inoperative on the paper and the paper will be clamped by the fingers 42 so that it cannot be fed or advanced when the platen is turned.
My invention as hereinbefore described is particularly adapted to detail and summary work in connection with way bills, in which character of work two work sheets are employed, saidsheets being arranged side by side' on the platen. The way bills may be copied n extenso one after another on the work sheet at the left-hand side of the platen, while the right-hand work sheet is adapted to receive only the totals of the way bills in condensed order. Tt will be understood that in .work of this character a way bill may occupy any number of lines on the left-hand sheet depending on the number of items on the bill, and that said sheet must be correspondingly line spaced a plurality of times. Further it will be understood that during the printing and spacing operations on the left-'hand sheet While the items on a way bill are being copied, the right-hand sheet is neither printed on nor advancedl To obtain these results the left-hand set of paper feeding and controlling devices, including the left-hand main and secondary feed rollers and the left-hand pair of pressure rolls, 'coperate with the platen to control and feed the left-hand or detail sheet; while at the same time the right-hand set of paper controlling devices are in the Fig. 4 position, the feed and pres` sure rollers being released and inoperative and the clamping fingers 42 cooperating with the` erasing shelf to clamp or grip the right-hand on summary sheet and prevent its being advanced when the platen is turned. Then the lasty item on the way bill has been copied on the detail sheet and said sheet is advanced for receiving the line of totals of said way bill, then the right-hand linger piece 25 is pushed back to the Fig.

According to the systemvin vogue in the business tor which my improvenients as herein illustrated were designed, the left-hand or detail sheets are filed for reference while the condensed records or summaries are forwarded to the auditor of the concern.
It will be clear tha tI my improvements may be used in other ways besides that described, and that'as has been stated they may be cmployed with single wide sheets extending substantially throughout the full width ot the platen. Further it will be understood that various changes ma)7 be resorted to without departing from my invention. An.

A further modification relating to a detail of construction is illustrated in Fig. 7 which shows a fragmentary portion of an erasing plate or shelf 5t) which is formed at suitable intervals with pairs of parallel kerfs or slots (SO, .each pair of kerfs providing between them a tongue 61 which receives and is covered by a sheath 62 of rubber or the like. lt will be understood that one of these sheathed tongues is to be arranged opposite each ot the clamping fingers, so that .each clamping finger Will coperatie` with onel of the sheathedbtongues, ln the Fig. 7 construction the vsheets 41:5' with. lwhich the clamping fingers of the first described constructions were provided Inlay be dippensed with. l

6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a single platen, two paper feeding devices, each adapted to feed a separate sheet at the introductory side of the platen, and hand controlled actuators each connected with one only of saiddevices, said actuators being independent of each other and operative on said devices so that either one of the sheets may be fed with the platen during the turning thereof while the other sheet remains quiescent against the platen as it is turned.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a single platen, means for feeding paper at one end of said platen, and sepa rately controlled means for feeding a different sheet of paper at the other end of said platen, both. of said means cooperating directly with the platen at its introductory side to feed the separate sheets thereover at different times and so that either one of the sheets may lie quiescent' against the platen while said platen is being turned to feed the other sheet.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a single platen, a feed roller eooperative ivith the platen near one end, a second feed roller cooperative with the platen near its opposite end, keys mounted on the platen frame, and means operative by said keys for independently releasing and rendering operative said feed rollers, the feed rollers being thus controllable to permit the platen to be turned to feed either one of two sheets while at the same time the other sheetl extending around the said platen remains quiescent.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, means arranged near one end thereof for controlling'a work sheet at opposite sides of the printing line, a set of devices for moving said means into and out of operation, other controlling means at the oppositeend of the platen for controlling a work sheet at opposite sides of the printing line, and a second set of devices for moving said other controlling means into and out of operation.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, means arranged near one end thereof for controlling a work sheet at opposite sides of the printing line, a set of devices for moving said means into and out of operation, other controlling means at the opposite end of the platen for controlling a work sheet at opposite sidesof the printing line, and a second set of devices for moving said other controlling means into and ont of operation, said sets of devices being independently operative.
