My invention is illustrated as applied to a platen carrier like that employed on the Smith Premier typewriting machine, but the nature of my improvements is such that they may be readily adapted to other forms of writing machines.
In carrying out my. invention in the present instance I arrange a pair of parallel links on the rear rod oi? the platen carrier, said links carrying-a feed roller which may be termed a secondary or supplementary teed roller in contradistinction from the usual main feed rollers and alsp from the usual n'iargin feed rollers of the machine. This secoiidary feed roller extends lengthwise of the platen and is arranged above or in advance of the main feed-roller and between the platen and the usual paper table. Springs tend constantly ,to press this supplementary feed roller into engagement with the platen or the paper. thereon. The paper table is inclined u wardly away from the the introductory side thereof and forms with theplaten a sort of pocket-like opening comparatively wide at the top or sheet and the substitution of another the record sheet remains in the control of the platen and the secondary feed roller.
The special advantages of my invention will be explained at length later on.

Studs 13 project laterally from the side plates 10 of the platen frame and are engaged by hooked links 14.- pivoted at 15 to the side bars 7 of the truck. The truck and the platen frame or carrier constitute a platen carria 'e. It will be understood that the platen is adapted trolled in such movements by the usual line spacing devices (not shown), or by the finger wheels 16 fixed on the ends of the axle 9. It will further be understood that the platen "and platen frame are adapted to be rocked on the carriage truck to expose the writing, the rockin movements being conveniently controlled y a finger piece l7 fixed to the front bar 11 of the platen carrier. Links 18 are pivoted to and depend from the rear bar or rod 12 of the platen carrier, said links calrrying a rod or shaft 19 in which is mounted a paper feed roller 20 hereinafter termed the main feed roller. This paper feed roller extends lengthwise of the platen and is shown in the present instance as a single roller though obviously it may be divided to provide a plurality of separate rollers. The roller 20 is pressed into engagement with the platen or with the paper thereon by leaf sprin s 21 which are secured by nuts 22 to threa ed pins 23 projecting rearwardly from standardslQl rising from and fixed to the rear bar 12 at each end portion thereof. The lower or free ends of the springs 21 cotiperate with sleeves 25 arranged on the rod 19, one near each end between an end of the feed roll 20 and the neighboring link 18. The paper table 26 is suitably secured to the standards 24 and is inclined upwardly at the rear or introductory side of the platen and above the main feed roller 20. A rod or shaft 27 is carried oy the linksu18 below the rod 19 which supports the main feed roller, said rod 27 being of smaller diameter than the rod 19 and serving as, a pivotal sup rt for a. (paper plate 28, the latter exten ing forwar ly at the under side of the platen and its free end portion being springressed toward the platen by the rear en portions of paper guiding fingers 29, the latter being suitably secured to supporting arms 30 rising from the front frame bar 11 and slidablymounted not differ essentially from those found on the No. 4 Smith Premier machine and it is not deemed necessary to describe them at greater length.
A hand-operated releasing lever 31 is suitably secured to the left end of the rod or shaft 19 in a fixed relation with said rod or shaft, said lever being provided with a tail 32. When the hand lever '31 is swung forward its tail fulcrums in the usual way on the platen frame near the rear left-hand corner thereof, the movement of the lever being effective to release the mairnfeed roller 20 or move it away from the platen to inoperative position as shown in Fig. 4. From an inspection of this figure it, will be noted that the releasing operation also serves to release the paper plate 28 and-the paper fingers 29, the pivotal movement of the paper plate on the rod 27 being limited in one di rection so ihat the plate is effective tomove oil the paper fingers.
I prefer also to employ means for locking the main feed roller, the aper plate and the paper fingers in release position and any convenient means may be made use of for this purpose. That shown in the drawings end. Engaging this slot is a headed screw 38 which projects inwardly from the inner face of the left-hand side plate 10 of the platen frame.
The normal relation between the screw 38 and the latch 33 is shown in Fig. 2 where it will be noted the screw 38 is engaged with the forward end of the slot- 36. When the latch 33 is employed and it is desired to release the paper feeding and controlling devices and lock them in released position, this may be accomplished by pressing forward and dowliward against the finer i ece 35 of the latch, causing therele'asmg. ever 31 to swing forward to release the paper feeding and controlling devices and causing the latch 33 to move forward bodily and to turn slightly on its pivotv 34. The result is that the lower edge of the slot 36 bears against the shank of the screw 88 as the latch mo'ves forward, and when the extension 37 of the slot 36 reaches the screw 38 the latch receives a slight upward pivotal movement so that the extension 37 engages the pin, locking the parts in the, positionshown in Fig. 4. The paper table or plate-like paper guide 26, it will be noted, though bent slightly at its top and. bottom edges away from the platen, lies for the most part in a plane which may be termed the general plane of the paper table or paper nude, and it will be seen that by arranging the secondary and main feed rollers at opposite sides, or substantially at opposite sides of the general plane of the paper table, the secondary feed roller being at the front and the main feed roller for the most part behind this general plane, I am enabled to obtain desirable results. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
in u typcwriting machine and in a condoused record mechanism, the combination with a rotary platen, of a main food roller; and a continuous secondary feed roller arranged lengthwise of the platen, said feed rollers being parallel with each other and both cooperating directly with the platen or the paper thereon, the main feed roller being arranged to cooperate with both the record sheet and the bill sheet and the secondary feed roller being arranged to cooperate with one only of said record and bill sheets and operating to feed the one sheet independently of the other sheet.
In a typewriting machine and in a condensed reeord mechanism, the combination with a rotary platen, of a main feed roller normally in spring-pressed engagement with the platen; a continuous secondary feed roller normally in springpressed with the platen, said feed rollers being arranged lengthwise of the platen and parallel with each other. the main feed roller being arranged to cooperate with both the record sheet and bill sheet and the secondary feed roller being arranged to cooperate with one only of said bill and record sheets and operating to feed the one sheet independently of the other sheet; and means for releasing the main feed roller.
' 3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a rotary platen, a paper feed roller extending continuously along the platen and arranged so that work sheets may be introduced at opposite sides of it into the machine, said work sheets being vaneed independently, said paper feed roller cooperating with only one of said work sheets to advance it, and separate means for advancing the other one of said work sheets.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combina tion with rotary platen, of a paper table lying behind said platen and inclining.upwardly and rearwarelly therefrom so as to form with said platen an opening or pocket, the width of which increases from the bottom upwardly; a feed roller arranged at the engagement adapted to be ad month of said pocketand so that apassage is atforded for paper at each side of said feed roller; and a second feed roller arranged below the first said feed rollers cooperating directly with the platen and each operating independently of the other to feed paper.
