Description

G. L. LYON.
BAG HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT.26,19OB.
932, 1 5 1 Patented Au 24, 1909.
GEORGE L. LYON, 0F BAINBRIDGE, NEW YORK.
BAG-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 26, 1908. Serial No. 454,923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ilainbridge, in the county of Ghenango and State of New York, have invented an Improvementin Bag-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a bag holder for yieldingly supporting a bag and holding the same open while being filled, and the object thereof is the provision of a bag holder of simple and inexpensive construction, in the use of which the bags to be filled are held in place with their mouths in preferably an inclined posit-ion, in which the bags may the more readily be filled and this without the intervention of a hopper member such as is ordinarily employed.
In carrying out my invention, I preferably employ laterally yielding spring upright members, a bracket slidably mounted on each of the said uprights, means for yieldingly supporting each bracket and means secured to the said brackets for supporting a bag and holding the same open while being filled, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved bag holder. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken centrally and at right angles to the position of the device as shown in Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the drawings, 10 designates a base on which the parts composing the bag holder are supported. On this base 10 I preferably employ a pair of oppositely disposed uprights which are made of sheet metal or other material having the requisite resilient or elastic property to automatically return to an initial position after having been removed therefrom. The lower parts of the uprights indicated at 11 extend upwardly from the base 10, and each upright in a suitable position is preferably turned at a right angle on itself so that the upper portions 12 of the uprights lie substantially in the same plane, and these uprights may be connected to the base 10 by means of the rivets 13 or otherwise. The upper extremity of each upright is provided with a lug 14 having an eye or aperture 15 therein and on the upper portion 12 of each upright I employ a bracket comprising an upright portion 16 and limb members 17 18 which latter are preferably turned at right angles to the upright portion 16 and are provided with suitable recesses adapted to receive the said portion 12 of the upright member and in which the bracket may slide thereon.
The outer end of the limb 18 is preferably up-turned as indicated at 19 and is also provided with an eye or aperture adapted to receive one end of a spring 20, the other end of which is connected in the eye 15 of the lug 14 so that the bracket member is yieldingly supported by the said spring 20 and slidable upon the upper portion 12 of the upright. To each bracket a bar 21 is connected by means of rivets 22 or otherwise and each of these bars is curved in the upper portion thereof and at its inner end is provided with a curved support-arm 23 extending in opposite directions and the support arms 23 are provided with pins 2e adapted to pass through and secure a bag in position thereon; it being noted that the arms 23 are inclined to the horizontal so that when in position the mouth of the bag is held at an inclination in order that as will be apparent, the operator may the more easily fill the bag with the material which it is to contain.
It may be assumed that the normal positions of the uprights of the hereinbefore described bag holder are as shown in dotted lines Fig. 1, and in the use of the device, the bag to be filled is placed between the uprights which are moved toward one another and the mouth of the bag fitted over the support-arm 23 and the uprights released, whereupon by their own action they will return as far as possible to their initial position and in so doing, securely hold the bag in place while the same is being filled.
I claim as my invention:
1. A bag holder comprising a suitable base, a pair of laterally yielding uprights normally spread apart at their upper free ends and adapted to be moved toward one another to engage and apply tension to the bag being held at the mouth thereof, and spring actuated bag engaging and supporting devices connected to the upper free ends of said uprights and movable longitudinally thereof, whereby a bag is supported in an open position while being filled.
2. Abag holder comprising a suitable base, a pair of uprights normally spread apart at their upper free ends and each composed of yielding portions at the lower ends and substantially inflexible portions at the upper Patented Aug. 24, 1909.
ends and together laterally yielding from their normally spread apart position toward one another for use under tension in holding a bag and keeping the mouth thereof open, and spring actuated bag engaging and sup porting devices connected to the up er free ends of said uprights and movable ongitudinally thereof, whereby a bag is supported in an open position while being filled.
In a bag holder, the combination with a suitable base, of a pair of uprights each formed from a fiat bar of yielding material in which the lower portions of said bars are parallel with the edges of the base and adapted to yield under tension and the upper parts occupy a position at right angles to the lower parts and edgewise to the laterally yielding action so that said upper parts are substantially inflexible, and bag engaging and supporting devices connected to the up per free ends of said uprights for supporting a bag in an open position while being filled.
4. In a bag holder, the combination with a suitable base, of a pair of uprights each formed from a flat bar of yielding material in which the lower portions of said bars are parallel with the edges of the base and adapted to yield under tension and the upper parts occupy a position at right angles to the lower parts and edgewise to the laterally yielding action so that said upper parts are substantially inflexible, and spring actuated bag engaging and supporting devices connected to the upper free ends of said uprights and movable longitudinally thereof, whereby a bag is supported in an open position while being filled.
5. In a bag holder, the combination with a I suitable base, of a pair of uprights each formed from a fiat bar of yielding material in which the lower portions of said bars are parallel with the edges of the base and adapted to yield under tension and the upper parts occupy a position at right an les and for yielding under tension.
Signed by me this 18 day of September 1908.
