APPLICATION FILED MAY 3,1909.

.5 vmos:
ATTURNEYS wlmssas UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL S. FRE'IZ, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
UMBRELLA-GEAT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. FRE'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Umbrella-Geat, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a geat formed of a plate, which is adapted to embrace the rib of an umbrella, and having near its side edges side openings and in said edges recesses, the recess of each edge being in alinement with the adjacent opening, so that the pivot pin of the stretcher of the umbrella may occupy the respective recess and openings, and thus firmly retain said pin in position, while forming the joint for the stretcher.
For the purpose of explaining the invention, the accompanying drawing illustrates a satisfactory reduction of the same to practice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an umbrella geat embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section thereof on line a'w, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a section thereof, including that of a rib to which the same is applied, and a portion of a stretcher in elevation. Fig. 4t represents a face view of the blank from which the geat embodying my invention is made.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawing :A designates an umbrella geat, the same having a body of U-shape with inturned lips B, so as to embrace an umbrella rib of the order of a paragon. In the opposite sides of said body, are openings C, and in the edges of said lips are recesses D, said openings and recesses being in alinement and adapted to receive the pin E, which connects the stretcher of the umbrella with the rib and forms the pivot of the former.

then inserted through the geat, rib and I stretcher and tightened therein in any suitable manner.
It will be seen that the geat is of simple and inexpensive construction, possesses the strength requisite for the purpose and may be quickly secured in position. Attention is furthermore directed to the fact that the recesses D are semi-circular or segments of complete openings, and as they occupy the edges of the lips, there is a saving in the length of the piece of metal of which the geat is formed, as will be apparent on inspection of Fig. 4, which is an illustration of a blank from which the geat is produced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A geat composed of a U-shaped body, and inturned lips thereon, openings in the sides of said body and recesses in the edges of said lips, said openings and recesses being in alinement.
2. The combination with an umbrella rib of a geat thereon composed of a U-shaped body, and inturned lips thereon, openings in the sides of said body and recesses in the edges of said lips, said openings and recesses being in alinement, and a pivot pin for the stretcher of the umbrella occupying openings in the rib and said openings and recesses of the geat.
3. A geat composed of a U-shaped body and inturned lips thereon, said body being provided with openings in its sides and said lips provided with recesses in their edges, said openings and recesses being in alinement and the edges of the lips terminating within a line drawn through the openings in the
