CHARLES W. SMITH, OF SANDUSKY, OHIO. I
CLOSURE-FASTENER FOR BOTTLESIHII PFII\T(5rl .CRATES Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1909.
Application filed october 12, 190s, serial No. 457,316. Renewed Ju1y 3, i909. serial No. 505,890.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES lV. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and .State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closure-Fasteners for Bottle-Shipping Crates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeI and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawf Y ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in boxes or crates for shipping bottled goods, etc., and comprises means for securely holding the closure of the box.
The invention comprises various details of'construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter' fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which z-- Figure l'is a perspective view of a shipping box showing my improvement as applied thereto. Flg. 2 isa sectional view through the fastening device upon the back of the box and closure showing the parts held in closed relation to each other, and
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the locking mech`l anism. l
Reference'now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a box or crate which may be of any' size or shape and provided with a closure B, the ends of which are longitudinally grooved lto receive the 'angled -metallicstrips or bars D for reinforcing the closure and prevent-ing the same from warping.
.E is a bail-shaped member which is hinged nection with eyes F upon the closure and is so mounted that, when the closure 1s thrown back -to a vertical position, the bail will restl upon the upper ends of the side wall of the crate and, when the closure is thrown to its limit in the opposite direction, its marginal edge will be flush with the .outer faces ofthe sides and ends of thebox. The rear wall of the box is recessed away as at G near its upper edge, and H designates a. catch made preferably in the form of a staple which is driven into the upper edge of the rear rwall ofthe box and is adapted to bridge overy said recess, the staple when adjusted in place having its horizontal portion flush with the upper .edge of the rear wall, as shown clearly in the drawings.-
K designates a hook which is count-crsunk in the under surface ofV the closure adjacent tothe rear end thereof, said hook` being so positionedl that, when the closure is upon the top of the box, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will engage' said staple in the recess G, thus securely holding the rear edge of the closure-to the rear wall of the box when ythe free edge .of the closure'and the front wall thereof, which are provided with the apertures N, are adapted to receive a seal O, as shown in Fig. 2,'of the drawings.'
From the foregoing, it will be' noted that, by the provision of a fastening means as shown and described, a simple and efficient device is afforded whereby, when the closure is swung over the box, the hook will auto' matically engage the staple and securely hold the rear edge of the closure to the rear wall of the box and, when the seal is broken, the closure will be allowed to swing rearward, the hookautomatically detaching from the; staple and allowing the closure to turn back into a vertical position, as shown clearly vin the drawings By lthefprovision of the metallic strip or bar which is seatedin the ends of the closure, the latter will be reinforced and held from warping which will insure the hook always engaging the staple when the closure is throwninto a horizontal position across the top of the box.
What I claim to be new is In combination in a shipping crate having a cover, a swinging bail pivota lly connecting the cover to thecrate, said'cover havingv a recess in the upper edge of the' rearwall ing its outer portion Hush with the up er edge of the rear Wall of the crate, e hoo ed closed as it is moved over the top of the crate, as set forth.
10 In ltestimony' whereof I hereunto aiix my strip having a shank portion seated in a vresignature in the presence of two witnesses.
cess in the under side of the cover adjacent to and ush Wththe under surface thereof, the free end of said hook being inclined and adapted to contact with and drew the cover CHARLES W. SMITH. Witnesses:
