FAYETTE A. CLARK, OF BRUSHTON, NEW YORK.
BOX-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,391, dated September 15, 1891.
Application filed May 6, 1891. Serial No. 391,780. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FAYETTE A. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brushton, in the county of Franklin and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Box-Cover, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in shipping-crates, boxes, and analogous receptacles.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of boxes, shippingcases, and analogous receptacles and provide simple and efficient means for securely fastening the cover to the body.
The invention consists of the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a box constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig.2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view, the cover being in the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view, the cover being in position preparatory to removal. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view, the cover being removed. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the cover.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1. designates the body of a box, having a central transverse division-board 2 and provided at its ends with end bars 3, which project above the upper edges of the body and are adapted to have the ends of a cover 4 abut against them. The cover 4 is composed of two sections 5, which have their inner adjacent ends connected by hinges 6 and have their outer ends 7 rabbeted on their upper faces and beveled on their lower faces and provided with central recesses S.- The ends 7 are adapted to engage metal straps 9 when the cover is in position and the sections are in alignment, and the bands or straps 9 are arranged adjacent the inner faces of the projecting portions of the end bars and are U- shaped and have their depending portions secured to the sides .of the body 1. The straps 9 are centrally supported by metal blocks, which are arranged on the upper edges of the ends of the body and are received in the recesses 8 when the cover is in position, and are secured in place by screws, which pass through perforations of the straps and openings of the blocks 10 and enter the ends of the body. The cover is adapted to break in the middle to disengage its ends 7, and is centrally supported by a plate 11, provided with a central opening 12 and secured to the upper edge of the transverse division-board, and is adapted to receive within its central opening a screw 13, which is arranged in an opening of the cover and passes through the plate 11 and enters the division-board and secures the cover in position. The sections of the cover are engaged by a disk lat, which is arranged on the screw 13 and is provided with a central opening slightly smaller than the head of the screw and countersunk to enable the head to be flush with the outer face of the disk.
The invention is equally applicable to shipping-cases, crates, and analogous receptacles and storage-vessels, and it will be seen that the cover is securely fastened to the body, and that it is simple, inexpensive, strong, and durable.
lVhat I claim is- 1. The combination of the body provided at its ends with bars 3, projecting above its upper edges and having a central divisionboard 2, the straps secured to the body and arranged adjacent to the inner faces of the end bars 3, the blocks arranged on the upper edges of the ends of the body and centrally.
supporting the straps, the plate 11, having a central opening and secured to the divisionboard 2, the cover constructed of sections having their inner edges hinged and their outer edges provided with recesses and adapted to engage the straps and receive Within their recesses the blocks, the disk having an opening, and a screw passing through the opening of the disk and through the cover and the plate 11,substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The body having the straps 9 secured thereto and elevated above the upper edge of the body so as to form recesses, the cover 4, form ed in two pieces hinged together at their my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FAYETTE A. CLARK.
