UNITED STATES PATEN OFFICE.
JOHN PHELPS, OF SHELBYVILLE, ILLINOIS.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR LEGS OF TABLES AND CHAIRS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PI-IELPs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Legs of Tables and Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for legs of tables and chairs, the main object of my invention, being the provision of a device which is made from a single blank of metal, and provided with means whereby the leg of the table or chair is provided with a socketed fastening, the blank being made of malleable metal, so that the same can be readily bent to fit any desired size of leg, and be provided with means whereby the socket is held at the proper adjustment upon the leg and be also rigidly secured to the chair or table.
l have found by experience, that my device renders the attachment of legs to tables or chairs more easy, and where the wood has been split, it provides a socket for the reception of the leg, not necessitating the re boring of a hole in the table or chair to receive the leg.
To clearly showthe same, and its advantages, attention is invited to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of the cut blank. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the lugs bent up. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device in place the leg and body of a chair or table being shown in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings :The numeral 1 designates the blank, which is preferably formed of malleable metal, and is cut as shown in Fig. 1, to have the terminals 2, which are each provided with the elongated slots 3, and with the series of lugs 4, each of which is provided with the screw receiving opening or eye 5. Through the body of the blank, and approximately opposite these openings Specification of Letters Patent.

which when the blank is bent to form the collar, sleeve or socket 7, as shown in Fig. 3, receive screws which enter the leg (1, and thus secure the leg in the socket. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the lugs 4, are bent outward at right angles to the blank, and when in position they bear upon the underside of the chair or table body I), and are secured thereto by means of screws, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. In order to allow for various sized legs, the terminals 2 are overlapped, as shown in Fig. 3, thus bringing the slots 3 into alinement, so that a screw 8, may enter both slots and the leg, and thus clamp the terminals together and to the leg, and thus provide an adjustable fastening socket for chalr and table legs.
What I claim, as new is 1. A device of this character made from a single strip of malleable metal so as to be bent around and encircle entirely the upper end of the leg of a chair or table, and having lugs formed equidistantly upon one edge of the strip and bent outwardly at rightangles from the body of the strip, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device of this character, made from a single strip of malleable metal and provided with a series of openings in the body thereof, and elongated openings near the terminals thereof, and a series of lugs formed on one edge and bent at right angles to the body of the strip, said lugs each being provided with an opening, said strip being bent to encircle the upper end of a leg, screws passing through the openings of the strip and into the leg to secure the strip to the leg, and screws passing through the openings of the lugs and into the chair or table from the underside to secure the leg and strip to the underside of the chair or table.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
