Description
UNITED STATES` PATENT OFFICE.. l
CRUTOH.
Application filed April V1,
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CLEVELAND A. SHER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, resident of Alamosa, in the county oi Alamosa and State of Colorado, have made a certain new useful Invention in Crutches; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art Vto which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures oil reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention has relation to crutches, having a vertically adjustable and pivotally reversible leg, the object being to provide certain improvements therein, as will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists in the novel con-V struction and combinations oi parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, Figure l is a side view ot' the invention; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same showing the leg as adjusted pivotally in dotted lines, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail side view, partly in section, of the lower part of the crutch, the side pieces being shown as moved outwardly in dot-ted lines.
In these drawings,`the numeral 2 designates the saddle, mounted upon two side pieces 3 and 4, and between the latter is adjustably secured a handle 5. A leg G is also adjustably secured between the side pieces at the lower portions thereof by means oi devices 8 and 9.
On each end of the leg is provided a suitable tip, one asshown being a rubber tip 7, and the other a spike 7.
The devices 8 and 9 consist each of a bolt o, screw threaded at each end to engage nuts l) and c. The side rated at l2, to receive the nuts o and c, the perforations being respectively ot a diameter greater than that of the bolt (t.
The leg 6 is provided with a series of perforations 11, spaced equally apart, the perforations l2 of the side pieces 3 and 4l, being' spaced apart in each side piece a distance equal to a multiple of the distance separating adjacent ot the perforations 1l of the leg.
Specification of Letters Patent.
The side resiliency, the upper pieces 3 and 4;, through inherent are adapted upon the removal of of the bolts a., to spring outwardly as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, whereby the leg 6 has greater freedom of movement when reverse-d by pivotal movement upon the lower boltJ as a center, the upper bolt being re'e'ngaged with the alined perforations of the side pieces and of the leg, when the reversal of the leg is complete. The larger perforations of the side pieces serve as a guide` to facilitate the engagement of the bolts with the alined pertorations or" the side pieces and of the leg. The nuts o and c engaging the large perforations of the side pieces, project only slightly beyond the side pieces, and a similar and neat appearance is given to both sides or edges of the crutch. In the elastic outward movement of the side pieces, as shown in Fig. 3, in dotted lines, the perforations of the same will remain in alinement with the smaller perforations of the leg, owing to the greater diameter of the former perforations.
That I claim is:
In a crutch, side pieces having large perforations, a vertically adjustable and reversible leg between said side pieces and having lsmall perforations, upper and lower bolts engaging selected perforations of said leg and of said side pieces and having threaded ends, nuts engaging the related periorations of the side pieces and the ends of said bolts. said nuts and said bolts being removable and engageable with other selected pertorations of said leg and said side pieces in the adjust ment of the leg vertically, said side pieces upon removal of the upper bolt having movement outward through inherent resiii` ency upon the lower bolt as a center and thereby facilitating the reversal ot the leg pivotally upon the lower bolt as a center, and the large perforations of the side pieces serving as a guide in the engagement oi the bolt with the small perforations of the leg.
In testimony whereoie I alibi' my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses:
JOHN R. CAMY, FRANK D. MOODY.
