UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT O. NELSON AND JAMES NELSON, JR., OF LITCI-IFIELI), MINNESOTA.
MATCH-BOX.
To all whom it m04/ concern.'
Be it known that we, ALBERT C. NELSON and JAMEs N ELsoN, Jr., citizens of the United States, residing at Litchfield, in the county of Meeker and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to improvements in match boxes. V
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be employed as a receptacle or box in which the matches are packed and sold and which may also be employed as a .match safe or holder adapted to be hung up and from which the matches may be taken as needed.
A further object is to provide a combined n iatch box and holder or safe which will be simple and inexpensive in construction, eiiicient 1n operation and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularlyT pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the box as it is used for a package to contain the matches; Fig. 2 is a similar view when used as a match safe or holder; Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view of the box as shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 3 Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the inner portion of the box removed from the outer portion or cover; and Fig. 6 is a plan view of blank from which the inner portion of the box is formed. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary sectional view showing a modified means for holding and supporting the box in operative position as a safe.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the outer portion or cover of the box which may be constructed in the usual or any desired manner to provide a casing open at each end and adapted to slide over and to inclose the inner portion of the box. The outer portion 1 is here shown as constructed from a single piece of card board or other suitable material folded at intervals along its length .having its ends overlapping and secured to- Specification of Letters Patent.

gether by pasting or in any other desired In anner. In the bottom or lower side of the outer casing or coverl adjacent to one end isformed an aperture 2 by means of which said cover portion may be engaged with a nail or other suitable support and hung up for use.
The inner' portion ofthe box 3 is preferably formed from a single sheet of card board or similar material cut and notched. in the manner shown in Fig. 6 and having such notched portions folded along the dotted lines shown in Fig. 6. The inner portion of the box 3 comprises a bottom piece 4t, side pieces 5 and ends 6 and 7 which are formed. by the notched extensions on the ends ofthe bottom and side pieces.
The extensions on the bottom and side pieces which form the end 6 of the box are glued. or otherwise rigidly secured. together. The extensions on the bottom and sides of the box which form the end 7 are also rigidly secured together' and on the outer end of the extension of the bottom of the box forming part of this end 7 are addi tional extensions 8, on the outer edges of which are formed wings 9. The extensions S are spaced apart to form an opening 10, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
When the box is in a closed position and in use as a container or package for the matches, the extensions 9 will be folded up over the top or open side ofthe box, while the wings 9 will fold down and iit in close engagement with the outer sides of the box, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. In using the box as a match safe or holder, from which the matches may be removed. for use, the end 7 of the box is slipped out of the cover or casing l a sui'licient distance to permit the extensions S and wings 9 to be swung outwardly to form a trough, from which one or more matches may be removed by means of the opening 10 between the extensions 8. In order to hold the extensions 8 and wings 9 in their operative position to form the trough, we provide retaining lugs 12 on the inner corners of the wings 9 which are adapted to be engaged with the inner side of the top piece ofthe cover or outer casing l, when the latter is in the position shown in Fig. 2 ofthe drawings.
In order to limit the outward movement of the inner portion of the bex when employed as a safe and to hold the same in operative osition, the opposite or upper end of the box las secured. thereto a retaining loop or strip tWol parts of the same in operative pos strip lhebs formed in its outer end an eye l5 which is engaged with the neil or other sup-V "porting device upon which the box is hung..`
Vixen e cord or tepeis used in piece of the strip L?, said cord or tape Will be atteohedto the nail orsupport iny any suitable manner.
`iihen the bon` is arranged as shown inllig. 2 to provide e sole or holder, the matches may be readily taken from the trough formed at the lower yend thereof 'by the extensions 8 ond Wings 9, and es the matches are removed.
others from the upper portion ol the box will. move downwardly in position to be removed until all the matches have been used.` After the'matches have thosbeen `removed from the box, the same may be thrown away and another box hung` in its plee-e.` lt Vwill be` readily seen from the foregoingI description,
` that the box not only serves as a receptacle or package in which the matches are placed for yssle but-Will also serve es s convenient and at tractive holder or sele which owing; to the inexpensive nature of `the box may be` dis I the bottom 4 of the box portion 3 is .Formed e holel?. The .holes 136 and 17 nre so arranged that When the box` portion has been opened 1n the positionshown in Figs. 2 and B the holes Will Ibein alineinent and may be engagged With a nail or the like which will not only support the bon` but Will also hol Ll the tion.
From the foregoing description7 `taken `in connection with the aceompanyingy draw ings, the construction and `operation of the invention will be eadilyunderstoodWithout requiring a more extended explanation.` i
