Be it known that I, Sans ELIZABETH Gnonen Buormxim, of Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement in Picture Hanging and Removing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of my specification.

My invention relates to a device to be attached to a broom handle or pole by means of which a picture or other article to be hung upon a wall, may be either hung on a molding or nail as the case may be, or removed or taken down, without the use of a step-ladder.

The object of my invention is to produce a device of the character described, of cheap and economical construction and of easyand ready manipulation.

The device is intended to be applied to the end of a broom handle or other pole of sullicient length, as for example a window pole, that may be ordinarily used about a house.

The advantages of my invention will more clearly appear as I proceed with my description.

In the drawings, Figurel is a side elevation of my improved device, illustrated as attached to a pole with a picture hook and a portion of the picture wire in place ready for hanging; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same view; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation; Fig. l is a top plan view; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 except that the picture hook and picture wire are omitted and the clamping part of the device is shown open; and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which my improved device is to be made, on a smaller scale.

The device comprises a body portion A, an upwardly projecting hook-supporting member B and a spring-controlled clamping member C. The body portion is preferably stamped from a single piece of metal the form indicated in Fig. 6. The portions A A of said blank are bent into cylindrical form of a diameter adapted to slip readily upon the end ofa broom or other convenient pole that is apt to be about the house. The portion a connecting the main portions of the blank is bent into rectangular form as indicated in the drawings and the projections a of said portion a are bent into eyes to form journals for the pivot of the clamping member C. Projections a at the opposite side of said portion a of the blank are bent up at right angles thereto to form the rear vertical support of the picture hook, B. The clamping member C is hinged by means of pin u in the eyes a. The end of the clamping member U is prolonged beyond and below the pivot pin at C to butt against a tlat spring C secured in any convenient manner to the under side of the portion a of the body. The spring U" and the abutment C are so related that the clamping member C will be held either in a closed position as indicated in Fig. 1 or in an open position as indicated in Fig. 5.

The clamping member C is provided with projecting tongues 0 c of a distance apart sutlicient to enable them to embrace the rear supporting member for the picture hook, so that this clamping member may hold the picture hook tightly against said supporting men'iber.

As illustrated in the drawings a portion of the blank A is stamped out as indicated at c" to form a strap, between which and the horizontal portion a, the spring C is secured. The pin a is simply soldered to the clamping member C.

In the use of my device, the clamping member 0 is put into its open position as in dicated in Fig. 5 when a picture is to be removed or taken down. Vhen taking down a picture hanging on a molding, the device is slipped up between the wires so as to have the wires straddle the pole, and the rear supporting member B is slipped behind the picture hook until the bottom of said picture hook rests upon the horizontal portion a of the device; the picture hook is then lifted and taken off the molding. The same proceedings are had when a picture is to be removed from a nail except that in this case the flat portion a is made use of in lifting the wire oil the nail. In case of a single wire, the wire passes down back of the pole between the bifurcated portions a, a of the picture hook support B.

In hanging a picture the picture wire is hung on the picture hook in the ordinary manner, the picture hook placed so as to be supported on the portion a of the device, with its back resting against the support B; the clamping member O is then sprung back into its clamping position so as to close and hold the picture hook in position. The picture hook is then lifted and placed upon the molding. The device is then withdrawn, the spring permitting the clamping member to pass the lower part of the picture hook and swing into its open position as indicated in Fig. 5.

lVhile I have shown my improved device stamped from metal as indicated, it is apparent that it may be made in other ways and I do not wish to limit myself to this particular style of construction.

What I desire to claim as new and to cover by Letters Patent is 2-- l. A picture hanging device, comprising a main body portion formed from a single blank of flexible material, said blank having,

side pieces bent to form a socket, said side pieces being joined by a strap adapted when the body portion is bent into shape to form a horizontal support above the socket, said strap havingextensions at each side, one set of said extensions being bent upward to form a vertical support, and the other set being bent into eyes, in combination with a spring controlled clamping member pivoted in said eyes and having lateral projections adapted to embrace said vertical support.

2. A picture hanging device, comprising a main body portion stamped from sheet metal, said blank having side pieces bent to form a socket, said side pieces being joined by a strap of metal adapted when the body tal support above the socket, said-strap having extensions at each side, one adapted to be bent up to form a vertical support and the other bent into eyes,'in combination with a spring controlled clamping member pivoted in said eyes and adapted to engage against the vertical support.
