Description

H. BECK.
GALE wmnn.
APPLI'OATIOI run we. as. was.
Patented July 27. 1909 Imam-WA" UNITED HillA'lfES PATENT ()FFICE.
HARRY BEt/K, OF GRANT, NEBRASKA.
CALF-WEANER.
To all w/m'm "it may concern Be it known that l, llAnnr BECK, 2L citizen of the United States, residing at (hunt, in the county oi Perkins on d State of Nebraska, have invented new zmd useful Improvements in Cullearners, of which the lollowinp 2t specification.
This invention relates to the class of cure of live stock, and more purticulm'ly to cull wcuiicrs ttlltl huts for en oliject to provide ll device of the character which will lrc extremely simple in construction, and which will he provided with simple means for 011-- {raging the nose of u cult without piercing or injuring the septuio ()ther ohjects and :ulvuntsgcs will in ;ip p.-irent us the nuture oi the iiiventirm is letter disclosed, and it will he understood that changes within the scope of the cluims may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
in the drawing, forn'iing u portion of this specification, end in which like numerals oi reference indicate similar parts in the several views,l ignre 1 is it front view of the wcuner shmvine its application to the nose of a cult, l'ig. L3 is u similar view showing: the device detached parts l ein; in it position to apply the article to the eulis nose. Fig. 33 is it dctuii view of the swingingnrm.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is shown a calf wcener 1 comprising o metallic. plate 2 having rounded corners 3 :it the lower edge thereof, and at the upper end adjacent to the upper edge of the plate there is formed therein 21- recess 4. The plate is preferably of rectangular forrn, lint it will he understood that it may be of any preferred form as may le found most desirable. The plate is provided adjeeent to one end of the recess 4 with an arm 5 which is permanently secured to the plate by means of s rivet or the like. The arm 5 is extended upwardly, and curved toward the center of the plate t'tS indicated at 7 and carries or has formed inte rel therewith at the outer end thereof a s erical head 8. Ad jecent to the other" en of the recess formed in said plate is-shoWn-en erm't) similar in construction to the previously described arm :ind is retained to vtheiplate by means of a bolt 10 provided. with a nut 11 for clamping Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented July 27, 1909.
Serial No. 450,212.
cngrngeme t against one side of said phitc.
'lhe portior ol the arm 9 with which the bolt is engaged is somewhat cllipticnl, as shown at 12, end at the lower reduced end of the portion 13 is an inwardly directed stud 14 normally engaged in it IHISSUQ'Q 15 formed in said phite The holt 10 has e heud 15 formed at its outer end, and carried by the holt und coniined between the portion 12 and the head 15, is shown it helical spring it) for holdin the stud 14 normully cngn g cd in the pussug e 15.
in operation. when it is desired to apply the wei'iner to the nose of the cult the urm t) is swung into the position,:rs shown in Fig. 2 ol the drawing, this being done by lifting the portion 1.2 of said arm and moving the same toward the head 15 and against the tension of the spring 16 to disengage the stud 14 from the passage 15, and in this movement of the arm 9 it will be seen that it relatively large space is provided between the head 8 of the arm 7 and the head 9 of the arm 9, whereupon, the head 8 may be first engaged against one side of the septum, and the arm 9 moved to cne'uge the head 9 against the other side of the septum, and by moons of the spring 16 it is obvious the t when the stud H reaches the passage 15 the former will spring into the letter to prevent rotary movement of the arm 9 and to hold the some in H permanent position.
The device is extremely simple in construction, may be ntianufectured and put upon the market at a relatively low figure and may be used and enga ed with the nose of the calf withoutinjury thereto. The portion 13 of the arm 9 is provided with a finger piece 14 adapted to 1e grasped when it is desired to move said :n'm against the tension of the spring 16 to efieetively permit withdrawal of the stud 14 from the passage 15.
I claim:-
1. A calf weaner comprising :1, plate having a fiXednose-engagin element, a pivoted nose-engaging element located adjacent to the first named element, the plate having it passage formed therein, means carried by the pivoted element'edapted to engage in the passage, and spring means engaged with the pivoted element for holding the just named means yieldingly engaged in said passage.
2. A calf wenner com risinga ilatelmvin holding the stud yieldingly engaged in said 10 a fixed nose-engaging e ement, a olt loeetec passage. adjacent to the said element and removably In testimony whereof I affix my signature engeged with the plate, a pivoted nose-enin presence of two witnesses.
gaging element mounted upon the bolt, in 1 p 1 stud carried by said pivotednelement, said MARI BMJK' plate having a passage formed therein to re- Witnesses:
oeive the said stud, and spring means carried UHRISTIANA E. BECK,
by the bolt and engaging the pivoted arm for MAUDE BECK.
