Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGEc SERENO T MERRILL, OF BELOIT', WISCONSIN.
IMPROVED ARTICLE OF STFlAW-BOARD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 92,563, dated July 20, 1869.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SERENO T. MERRILL, of Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new, useful, and Improved Article of Manufacture of Straw-Board; and I do hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speciiieation, in which- .Figure 1 represents a roll of' straw-board prepared with water-proof material, and F1' g. 2 a plain roll of my straw-board.
Straw-board is made of hard stiff material, and is very solid and compact, and, as heretofore made and furnished to the market and trade, it has been made in plain hat sections of about twenty-six inches in width and thirty-eight'inches long, and put up lin bales or bundles like bales of sheet metal. This mode of manufacturing straw-board makes it liable to considerable waste in many of the places where it is now used, and prevents its practicable use in many places where it cau be profitably employed when this serious objection is removed, such as rooting, sheathing for buildings, Src.; and it can be used, whenniade into continuous sheets, to take the-place of other and more expensive grades of paper.
The nature and object ot' my invention consist in making and preparing for the trade straw-board, or that made chiefly of straw, in continuous sheets, so that the user can cut and adapt it to his purposes without waste when used for book-binding, making boxes, &c., and to exact lengths when used for roofing, sheathing, and other similar purposes.
To enable others skilled in the art to make my improved straw-board, I will proceed to describe it.
The straw is reduced to pulp and prepared for the cylinder in the usual mode. I use two or three cylinders or drums, according` to the desired thickness of the straw-board. When two are used, the rst cylinder 0r drum gives oit' the sheet of paper-pulp from its periphery to the belt, by which it is conducted to that part of the second cylinder or drum which is in contact with a pressing-roller. The two sheets of paper-pulp thus united are carried forward by the belt over a guide-roller to a pair of pressing-rollers, when, by contact with the moist surfaces, they are made to adhere and constitute one sheet of board. This sheet is then passed over the driers and calenders, and wound, in continuous sheets of from one hundred to four hundred feet in length, upon large rollers, as shown in the figures.
I ani aware that light grades ot' other paper made ot' strong or elastic materials have been made in a similar manner, and I do not claim as my invention the saturating ot any paper with tar or other water-prooil material; but
l hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The continuous sheets of straw-board rolled for handling or transportation, substantially as specified, as an improved article of manufacture.
S. T. MERRILL.
