UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE ALBERT IIERDMAN, OF LONDON, COUNTY OF MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND.
FELT ROOFING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,588, dated May 21, 1889.
Application filed September 27, 1887. Serial No.250,852. (No model.) Patented in England March ll, 1887, No. 3,742.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
lie it known that I, GEORGE ALBERT HERD- MAN, a subject of the Queen of England, residing in London, in the county of Middlesex and Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Felt Roofing', (for which l have applied for Letters Patent in England, No. 3,742, dated March l1, 1887;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to felts, and has for its object the provision of an improved rigid felting material having corrugations or flutes for general use in the arts, as for roofing and other purposes.
The invention consists in the combination of two or more sheets of felt with an intel'- vening sheet or web of woven wire or other interstitial material, allot said thicknesses being corrugated or fluted. In this way a material is formed which has all the properties of ordinary felt and the added qualities of rigidity and self-support, which cannot be attained with ordinary felt or with materials having an interstitial web without corrugations.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure] is a plan view of the completed material, with the corner of one piece of felt turned up. Fig. 2 is a section ot a portion of the same, showing the corrugations more 35 clearly.
A A are two or more thicknesses of felt, and B is the interstitial web laid between the two felts and connected thereto by heat. After or in the process ot' uniting` the parts the sev- 4o eral thicknesses composing the completed material are corrugated or iluted by runningthrough rollers or in dies, so that the material has a rigidity which it could not have without the interstitial web and a stiiness and self- 45 support which it could not have without the eorrugations or flutes, and which a felt made up without an in terstitial web would not fully possess when new and would have no trace ot' when old, so that the corrugated material 5o composed otfelt sheets and an intermediate interstitial web possesses qualities which are not attained aside from this construction.
ll'hat I claim, and desire to secure by lietters Paten t, is- 5 5 A corrugated lelt material composed ot' two or more sheets of vfelt and an intermediate interstitial web ot metal united and corrugated, as set forth.
GEORGE ALBERT HERDMAN. l'lvitnesses:
