PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. SMITH,OF BOONTON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE POWER- VILLE FELT ROOFING COMPANY,
(LIMITED,) OF NEWF YORK, N. Y.
ROOFING AND LINING FELT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,636, dated March 81, 1891.
Application led October 23, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boonton, in the county of Morris and State of New Jer sey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Roong and Lining Felts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvementsl in rooting and lining felt; and the object of the invention is to provide the felt with slightly-raised portions or ribs at certain distances from the edge and running longitudinally of the sheetfor the purpose of forming guide-lines for the nails, and by which the overlapping of one sheet on another in the process of roofing or lining may be gaged and the work greatly facilitated.
The invention consists in forming on the sheet of felt inthe process of manufacture one or more longitudinal ribs running parallel to the edge of the sheet and formed by press'- ing outward the felt to give a slightly-raised line on its surface. This is preferably accomplished by incorporating in the single sheet of felt while in a plastic or pulpy state any suitable fibrous material in the form of strands or threads, which are so embedded as to produce a raised line on the surface ofthe felt. This raised portion can be produced by depressing the felt on one side to form a raised portion on the other side.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a sheet of felt provided with the raised guide-lines and formedby the incorporation of threads. Fig. 2 is an end view of the sheet shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents an end view of two sheets, showing the application of the guide-lines and also showing a modiication in the formv of lines. v

on and of the same material and body the longitudinal raised portions b. As before stated, this raised line of felt b is preferably formed by bulging the felt out on the surface in a line or lines parallel to the longitudinal edge of the sheet by incorporating in the single sheet when in its pulpy` or plastic condition before it becomes a completed product the threads c.
The incorporation of threads in felt for the purpose of making the same tenacious I am aware is not new; and while the incorporation of the threads will have this advantage in my invention they are primarily designed to produce the raised line upon the surface of the felt by the manner of incorporating and the process of manufacture.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the application of the guide-lines b, and also showing a modification in the form of guide-line, which in this case is simply a ridge either molded on or pressed outward on the upper surface by a corresponding depression of the under side.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. A sheet of felt, for roofing, lining, and other purposes, having one or more raised lines or ridges running parallel to the edge of the sheet, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A sheet of felt, for roofing, lining, and other purposes, having one or more raised lines or ridges running parallel to the edge of the sheet and formed by incorporating in the sheet threads or similar material, substantially as described, whereby a portion of the felt-surface is caused to bulge and form guidelines, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH A. SMITH.
Viitnesses:
EDWARD A. DAY, THOS. S. CRANE.
