Description

Utiel een JAMES FOSTER, JR., OF (JAMDEN, NEW JERSEY,
Anp FRANCIS J.
DILL, OF FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
VLetters Patent No. 86,830, dated February 9, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR MAKING CARPET-LINING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.
To vall whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES FOSTER, Jr., of Camden city, State of New Jersey, and FRAY 01s J. DILL, ofFoX- borough, Norfolk county, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Machine for Sizing and Connecting Carpet-Lining; l and we Vdo herebydeclare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The' nature of our invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of devices, as hereinafter described, for gumming, in the centre and at both edges, the inside of' two separate sheets or strips of paper between which the sheet of wadding is confined, and for pressing together and making intoa roll the three sheets thus formed.
A represents the platform, or floor, ofthe machine.
B B,the posts that support the horizontal rollers, or cylinders, and the sizing-rollers, the cylinders and rollers varying in size, according to the particular uses and purposes for which they are employed, to produce the required results.
`C is an upper cylinder, that contains the upper and outside strip oi' paper, or other useful material, lD; and
' E is another and the. lower cylinder, that contains the lower, or under strip of paper, G, from'which the machine is supplied.
Between these strips Ofpaper D and G, the centre strip of wadding, or other inaterial, H, is passed, and sized and rolled together upon the receiving-cylinder J.
The sizing-rollers, K and L, are in three divisions, for the purpose of sizing the paper strips D and Gin the centre and at each end, so as to take firm hold of the wadding H, and make a smooth and regular connection of the strips D, G, and H.
Under the sizing-rollers K and L are troughs M and CN, containing the sizing, or glue, torsupply the peripheries ofthe rollers, and the rollers K and L are driven, regularly and simultaneously, by belt and pulley-gearing P P P, connected with cylinders J and R.
The upper strip D passes from the cylinder O over the sizing-rollers L, Where it is sized on the under side. It then passes between two pressing-cylinders, S S, and again over another cylinder, T, and from thence between two other pressing-cylinders, U U, and from thence it is wound, with the wadding H and lower strip G, around the receiving-cylinder J. At the same time, the lower strip G passes from the cylinder E over and above the lower sizing-rollers K, thence downward, and under the cylinder V, and again up and between the pressing-cylinders S S, where the sizing then` is on the top of the strip G, with the waddingibetweeu both of', the strips D and G, so that the sizing takes hold of the wadding H on both of its sides, above and below.
The wadding H is fed into the machine between two close cylinders, WNV, upon .an apron, X, and under *he toothed cylinder R, that regulates the even-movement of the wadding until it unites with and passes between the stripsD and G, between the cylinders S S, from whence itis carried (sized andconnected on both sides) to the receiving and collecting-cylinder J, a complete carpet-lining.
We are aware that machines are in use for sewing and stitching carpetliningr together, as Well as machines for gumming the inside of two separate sheets, or strips, of paper, for the purpose of holding between them asheet of wedding, but snch we do not claim; but
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the sizing-rollers K and L, each divided into three parts, with their troughs M and N, the cylinders, or rollers, C, E, J, R, S, T, U, V, and W, and the apron X, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described, and forthe purpose set forth.
