UNITED STATES PATEN T OFFICE.
MORRIS H. MARCUS, OF BRADDOGK, PENNSYLVANIA.
FASTENER FOR LEGGINGS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Morons H. MARCUS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Leggings, of which the following a specification, reference being had thereinto the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a fastener for leggings, such as used by the militia and sportsmen.
The object of my invention is to provide a. fastener that will be positive in its action, simple and durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and easily and quickly fastened upon a limb.
The invention comprehends metallic reinforcei'nents for the meeting edges of a leg ging, one of said roinforcen'ients being provid ed with pockets to receive the ends of the ruljoining reinforcements, said reinforcements being finally connected together by a clasp. By the construction of my fastener it is impossible for a logging to become accidentally disengaged from the limb of the wearer, andv the fastener maintains the legging in firm engagement with the limb just the same as if laces were used thereon.
The detail construction of my legging fastener will be presently described and claimed.
Referring to the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of a legging equipped with my fastener, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the legging, Fig. i is a vertical sectional view of the legging illustrating a clasp used in connection with the same, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating the fastening means of the leggin To put my invention into practice, I provide one of the meeting edges 5 of the legging with a metallic strip 2, said strip extending from the upper edge of the legging to the lower edge thereof, and is secured to said legging by rivets 3 or similar fastening means. The metallic strip 2 adjacent to each end thereof is provided with a pocket 4, the object of which will presently appear. The other meeting edge 1 of the legging is provided with a metallic strip 8 having a cen- Specification of Letters Patent.

tral reinforced portion 9. This strip is formed with resilient ends 10 adapted to be sprung into engagement with the pockets l of the meeting edge 5. The strip 8 1s secured to the meeting edge 1 by rivets or similar fastening means 11.
To fasten the meeting edges intermedlate their ends, I provide the meeting edges with a clasp, said clasp comprising a button 12 adapted to engage in the socket 13, the button 12 being carried by the meeting edge 1, while the socket 13 is carried by the meeting edge 1. This clasp is similar to the conventional form of glove clasp at present used.
The metallic strips 2 and 9 are covered and protected by the fabric of the legging, consequently the fastening means will not be visible, and the legging will present a neat appearance. The strips 2 and 9 constitute reinforcements for the meeting edges of the legging, and these strips can be easily and quickly secured together to retain the legging upon a limb.
Such variations in my invention as fall within the scope of the appended claim can be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
The combination with a legging, of a pair of metallic reinforcing strips, one of said strips positioned against the outer face of said legging and the other of said strips against the inner face of said legging, said strips flush with the longitudinal edges of said legging, means for securing that strip oositioned against the outer face of the legging to the legging at the ends of the strip and at points intermediate the ends thereof, means for securing that strip which is positioned against the inner face of the legging to the legging at points removed from the ends of the strip whereby said strip is formed with a pair of resilient ends, that strip which is secured to the outer face of the legging provided at a point in proximity to each end with a socket closed at its outer end, the mouths of said pocket 0pposing each other, said pockets adapted to reoeive the resilient ends of that strip secured to the inner face of the legging, one of said members provided centrally thereof with a recessed enlargement constituting a socket, and a protuberance carried by and projecting from the other of said members approximately centrally thereof and adapted to frictionally engage with the wall of the socket for connecting the two members together, that strip provided with the resilient ends gradually increasing in thickness from each end toward the center.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MORRIS H. MARCUS.
