Description

R. G. I). LEGG.
BOTTLE HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 29, 190B.

UNITED STATES PATENT @FFTQ.
RODGER O. D. LEGG, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
BOTTLE-HOLDER.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, Roncnn C. D. Lnoo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in bottle holders, designed more particularly for location upon the outside of the house or door or stoop.
It has for its object to provide for the convenient and effective retention of the bottle or jar in place, as against unauthorized removal, and to provide also for the ready removal of the jar or bottle, when it may be desired to remove the contents of the latter, and to carry out these ends in a simple and inexpensive manner.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the acompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view thereof; Fig. :2 is a front view of the upper portion thereof, certain parts being broken away; Fig. 3 is horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. t is a vertical section taken on the line 4L4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the jar receiving ring taken 011 line 55 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detailed vertical section taken on the line 66 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a ring member 1 for receiving the lower end of a jar or bottle, and an upper clasp mem her 2 for receiving the neck portion of the bottle or jar. The ring member or annulus 1 is pivotally connected as at 3, preferably to one leaf of a hinged or jointed member 4:, suitably fastened to the side of a door or stoop of a house. The pivotal connection between the ring member and the hinge or attaching piece, permits said ring to be careened or inclined with relation to the jar or bottle for the ready insertion of the latter thereinto. The bottom clasp member 1 is extended and lapped upon itself suitably for Specification of Letters Patent.

varying it diametrically to conform to the size of the jar or bottle as in receiving the latter. The overlying or lapping portions of the bottom clasp-member have applied thereto and are received by clips or couplings 1 adapted to permit of sliding its overlying portions one upon the other, as in accommodating the clasp-member to the jar or bottle and for the retention thereof in position. The free ends of the clasp-member 1 are suitably bent or deflected as at 1, 1 to serve as stops, as against the casual displacement of the couplings or clips 1, as will be readily understood.
The upper or clasp member 2 consists preferably of a strap of metal formed with a loop 5 for readily receiving the neck of the jar or bottle, said loop having a plate like extension 6 arranged parallel with the corresponding attaching portion 7 of said clasp, connection being suitably ell'ected between said attaching portion, and the stoop or door of a house. Interposed between said attaching portion of the clasp and the stoop or door is a guard or keeper 8, to receive the plate like extension portion of the loop of said clasp. The loop extension portion or plate has attached to it a spring 9 preferably of helical form, suitably fixed in place and adapted to hold said plate like extension under tension or pressure when a bottle neck is inserted within the loop of the clasp. Arranged adjacent to the loop extension or plate 6 are preferably two spring pressed pawls 10 for engagement with the notched or serrated upper edge 11 of said plate or extension to retain the latter with the loop in effective position when adjusted to the bottle-neck, as against the removal of the bottle or jar therefrom. A suitable casing or inclosure 12 fastened to the stoop or door, over the pawl engaged portion of the slide or extension of the clasp loop, prevents unauthorized access being had to said pawl engaged parts when in locked position.
It will be noted that by suitably tilting the ring member 1, as above indicated, a jar or bottle may be received thereinto at its lower or bottom end, when by bringing the bottle into a perpendicular position said ring will be caused to assume its initial position, and with the clasp or loop in unlocked posi tion, the neck of the bottle may be inserted into said loop, and then by compressing said loop, as in sliding its extension or plate portion toward the bottle, said clasp or loop [S caused to closely encompass the neck of the bottle, and thus be held by the automaticor notched surface of the extension or plate of said 100 thus providing for locking the bottle in e ective-position as against surrep titious removal.
By the insertion of a suitable implement, through an opening or openings 13 for engaging the pawl or pawls in engagement withtheloop sliding extension, the clasp, under the action of its spring will be automatically released from the neckof the bottle, and by suitably manipulating the bottle, it may be readily removed from said clasp and thebottom engaging ring, as required.
It will be noted that by reason of the foregoing arrangement of' parts, a simple, inexpensive and effective device ofthecharacter described is provided for its intended purpose, whereby the bottle or ar maybe readi'ly inserted in place, and securely held therein and quickly removed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, theconstruction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring amore extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing anyofthe advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described as ascertained the nature of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:--
1. A device of the character described comprisinga ring member, and a claspm-emher, said ringmember having pivotal connection with its attaching means, and means for securing said clasp member in locked position.
2. A device of the character described embracing a ring member, a hinge member,
said ring member having pivotal connection with said hinge .member, a clasp member having a loop forming portion provided with a slide or extension, and means for engaging andv retaining said slide or extension in locked position. 3. A device of the character described comprising a ring member, a clasp member arranged directly above said ring member, and having a plate like extension provided with a notched or serrated upper edge, and a spring pressed pawl for engagement with said notched or serrated edge.
4. A device of the character described embracinga ring member, a clasp member arranged in alinement with said ring member, a keeper or guard, said clasp member having a slide or extension formed with a serrated or notched edge received by said keeper or guard and a spring pressed pawl or detent adapted to engage the serrated or notched edge of said extension, and an inclosure for said pawl and the pawl engaged portion of said slide or extension.
5. A device of the character described embracing a pivot ring member adapted to receive the lower end or bottom of a bottle, a clasp member having a loop forming portion adapted to receive or encompass the neck portion of said bottle, and having its loop forming portion provided with a slide or extension having a notched or serrated edge, a resilient member for the retention of said slide under stress or tension, and a spring pressed pawl for engaging the notched or serrated edge of said slide.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
