FREDERICK BEHRENS, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SAFETY CAN-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1909.
Application filed December 21, 1908. Serial No. 468,678.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK BEHRENS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Safety Can- Opener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a safety can opener, and more particularly to those in which a piece is removed from the end of a can by a blade traveling around a central pivot.
An object of the invention is to provide a can opener which can be operated by a single handle without danger to the hands of the operator.
Another object is to provide means whereby the piece removed may be held and prevented from dropping into the can.
A further objectis to provide means whereby the, device will be held in position during operation.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent upon consideration of the following description of one form of construction in which the invention may be embodied, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the under side, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section.
A guard plate 2 has a downwardly extending rim 3 upon which are a plurality of prongs 4:. A pivot 5 passes through the central part of plate 2 and has affixed to its upper end a handle 6. The lower end of pivot 5 has aflixed thereto blade bar 7 carrying blade 8. A spear 9 is formed on or attached to the lower end of pivot 5 and has a portion 10 of its length reduced in diameter. Plate 2 has a plurality of holes 11 therein for a hereafter mentioned purpose.
The operation of the device is as follows: Plate 2 having been placed in position upon a can it is desired to open, is pressed downwardly until prongs l, blade 8 and spear 9 perforate the top of said can. Handle (3 is then revolved around pivot 5, causing blade 8 to cut a circular piece from the top of the can. This piece is held upon spear 9, but may quite readily be removed therefrom by passing the point of a knife or other instrument through the holes 11 in the plate 2.
It is apparent that plate 2 in combination with prongs 4; prevents any danger of the operators hand being injured through the apparatus slipping.
If desired, blade bar 7 may be extended across plate 2 and a blade be placed at each end.
While one form of apparatus in which the invention may be embodied has been illustrated and described, it is obvious that various modifications and changes may be made, and the right is reserved to all such as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
In a can opener, a guard plate having a downwardly extending rim provided with a plurality of prongs, a pivot passing through the central part of said plate, a handle secured to the upper end of said pivot, a bladecarrying bar secured to said pivot on the underside of said plate, and a spear on the lower end of said pivot, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses at Los Angeles county of Los Angeles, State of California, this 12th day of December A. D. 1908.
FREDERICK BEHRENS.
