To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. DOBIAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkells; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ink wells.
The object of my invention is, to provide an ink well, so constructed, that when the ink becomes dry or exhausted in the ink-well the same may be filled by merely pulling a cord to open an inkreservoir to fill the well.
T he drawing hereto annexed forms a part of this specification and represents in Figure 1 a front view of an ink well embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view thereof.

In carrying out the aim of my invention, 1 use a base 1 provided with a plurality of pen-receiving grooves 2 and extending upward from this base 1 along the rear edge is the rear wall 3. Projected parallel with the rear wall 3 is the front wall 4:, the walls 3 and l supporting a suitable ink reservoir compris ing the base 6 and the overhanging compartm cut 7. This compartment is provided within its bottom with an opening 8, and held within this opening or perforation 8 is a plug 21. Positioned. near this opening 8 is a perforated lug 15 and extending upward from this lug 15 is a coil spring 16 which spring at its upper end is secured to the pivotally held lever 19 one end of this lever projecting beyond the wall 22 of the overhanging compartment T. Pendent from the projecting end of the lever 18 is the operating cord or strand 19 provided with a suitable handle 20. The plug 21 is secured to the inner end of the lever 18 by means of the link 25 the instrumentalities being so arranged that the coil 16 normally forces the plug 21 into the perforation.
Extending from the overhanging portion of the reservoir and forming a continuation of the perforation 8 is the supply pipe 9 which pipe is led into an ink well in the form of a bowl 10, this bowl being provided Specification of Letters Patent.

The ink well 10 has an opening within its bottom communicating with an opening 23 within the base 1, a suitable stopper 2 1 being held within this opening. In order to fill the well, the operator simply draws down the strand 19 to carry out of its seating the plug 21 so that a suiiicient amount of ink may be allowed to flow into the well 10. The reservoir is closed by means of a suitable cap or lid 5.
In referring to Fig. 3 it will be noted that the base and the walls 3 and 4: together with the bottom of the reservoir forms an open ended compartment 5, within which may be held suitable stationery in the form of paper and envelops.

Having thus described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is 1. An inkwell having in combination a base, a rear wall and a front wall, a reservoir supported on said walls provided with a perforated overhanging compartment, an open ended compartment being formed by said base, walls and reservoir, a lug within said reservoir, an ink-well, a pipe extending from said perforation in the overhanging compartment and entering said well, a plug within said perforation, a lever pivoted within said overhanging compartment, alink connecting said plug to said lever, and a spring secured to said lug and said lever, all arranged as set forth.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base, a rear wall and a front wall mounted thereon, a reservoir supported on said rear and front walls to form in connection with said walls and base an open-ended compartment, said reservoir having a bottom opening, an ink well, a pipe extending from said bottom opening to said ink well, a plug within said pipe, a lever pivoted within said reservoir, a link connecting said plug and lever, and a spring to force said plug into said pipe.
