Be it known that l, STEPHEN G. BALDWIN, of Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink-WENS; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in inkstands, and has for its object to provide a device of this class that will be very simple, composed of but few parts, and one that will not only be cheap in iirst cost, but will be durable and tasty and neat in appearance.

WVith these ends in view myinvention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, more fully de-v scribed hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figurevl is a perspective view of the complete device; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section, the lower point of the mouth-piece being broken away.

Like letters of reference mark the same parts throughout the several views.

A represents a closed reservoir, made of glass or any other suitable material, provided with a threaded opening, B, through its top wall.

C indicates a vertically-adjustable mouthpiece, the lower end of which is smaller than the top and rounded off to lit a pocket, b, in the bottom of the reservoir, directly beneath the threaded opening through the top of the reservoir. Said lower end is also provided with a small aperture, a, through which the ink is forced when the mouth-piece is screwed down. It will be Seen that the pocket b is located at the lowest point in the reservoir and immediately under the mouth-piece, so that when there is a drop of ink in the reservoir it can be forced up into the mouth-piece for use.

The hollow plug or mouth-piece is open at its top, and is externally screw-threaded, preferably, throughout that portion of its length the operator in filling the receiver may either pour the ink slowly into the top of the Inouthpiece and let it pass down through the aperture o into the receiver, or, a better way still, can withdraw the mouth-piece O entirely from the casing, and then pour the liquid directly into the reservoir, and then the Inouthpiece can be inserted. This is the preferred way of filling and is deemed the best.

\Vhen it is desired to use the ink and the reservoir should happen to be butpartly iilled, it will only be necessary to screw the mouth-piece downward until the aperture a reaches the level of the ink, when the same will begin to enter said opening a, and pass up into the hollow mouth-piece. It will be readily seen that with my improved mouthpiece the ink will be forced into it when screwed down, no matter if there is but a ery small quantity of ink in the reservoir, or if it is full.

The aperture or opening in the lower part of the mouth-piece can be made just large enough to enable the user to insert the pen into it, and thereby run no risk of getting the fingers soiled by inserting the pen too deep into the ink. rlhis could be accomplished very easily by regulating the mouth-piece so as to allow only a small quantity of ink to en` ter it.

It will be readily seen that the article described will not only present a neat appearance, but a great deal of ink can be saved by its use, as there will be no danger of the same becoming muddy or evaporating.

It is evident that the invention is not limited to any particular size or shape.
