UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM GENESLAW, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
FIRE-KINDLING COMPOUND AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GENESLAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F ire-Kndling Compounds and Methods of Making the Same, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accoi'npanying drawing.
My compound consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated, viz: one pound of boiling rosin; a suflicient quantity of absorbent cotton, covered with mosquito netting, to absorb the boiling rosin, and all the saw-dust that will adhere to the layer of cotton and form a covering or crust about the same. The cotton covered with mosquito netting is left in the boiling rosin for five or six minutes. It is then removed and the layer of covered and saturated cotton is covered with saw-dust and cooled until it becomes hard. It is then cut into cakes of any desired size.
The kindling compound thus made is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a layer of the conibined substances or materials; and Fig. 2 is a view showing a portion of a sheet or layer of the combined materials compressed with lines indicating how the sheet or layer is cut into cakes as required for consumption.
The object of my invention is to produce a kindling compound that will ignite rap- Speccation of Letters Patent.
Application led February 29, 1908.
Patented June 8, 1909.
Serial No. 418,423.
idly and without danger and be economical and reliable.
In the drawing 1- represents the saturated cotton or its equivalent; -2- a sheet of gauze or netting covering the cotton; 3 the crust or covering of saw-dust; and -ta cake with grooves 5 to indicate how sheet may be divided into cakes.
I claim:
1. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein described fire kindling compound, consisting of a layer of absorbent material, inserted between layers of gauze netting, and saturated in boiling rosin, and outer layers of saw dust and rosin adhering to, and incasing, the saturated gauze covered absorbent material all combined in cake form, substantially as set forth and described.
2. The herein described process of manufacturing a re kindling compound, consisting in impregnating with boiling rosin, a layer of absorbent material inclosed between layers of gauze netting, and covering said saturated material with outer layers of saw dust and rosin, and cooling the whole to form a hard outer crust, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM GENESLAW.
Witnesses: J oHN W. VVINTERS, JOHN F. KEER.
